I forgot to mention in my Buzz's Engine Makeover thread that I tore out all of the old fiberglass on the firewall, and replaced it with this:

It's Steiner Velvet Shield carbon fiber welding blanket, and it can withstand direct contact of up to 1800 degrees F. So it will definitely stand up to engine heat. You can get a 4x6 foot one from Northern Tool on this page of their site.
For help with installing it, get Paul McKibben's heat shield template here.
I used 3M weatherstrip adhesive to hold it in place. It's been there for a couple of months, and hasn't shown any sign of coming loose.
I did not replace the heat shield on the strut towers, but you could use the blanket for that as well.
The ultra-black color of the blanket looks very good in the car, and makes the engine stand out.
