Hi, New to the Forum and love reading all the great posts. I want to install a LS4 in my 88 Formula,3spd/Auto. After reading some of the posts on this type of conversion, I was wondering if it could be done any easier by mating a 4T60 to the LS4. Going with one of those after market ECMs and removing the DOD? I can pick up a LS4 less transmission for around $600.
The easiest way to do an LS4 is to use the transmission that was bolted to an LS4 originally, as the starter is mounted on the transmission, rather than the engine, and the harness already includes everything for wiring it up to that transmission.
A 4t60 is probably doable, but would be more work, and not really worth doing over just getting the 4t65 that came with the LS4.

As dobey says, plus the 4t65e hd that comes with the ls4 is actually a little stronger than the other 4t65e hds. Also mine and dog creeks use the tap shift option although mine isn't finished yet.
