Remove the VSS (held down by a tab and one screw). Pull it out very carefully, because you don't want to knock off the plastic gear. The gear shaft has a "full" mark on it. Fill through the hole it came out of.
As said be careful pulling it out as the gear falls off very easy. The vss tends to pop loose. One of the cheap springy claw tools works well for getting the gear out of the transmission if it does fall off.. Been there done that several times...
ok i pulled out the vss (and yes the gear fell off anyway :-P) but i dont see and fluid fill level on the shaft. my tranny is bone dry as i pulled the axles out and drianed it. i filled it with a quart of royal purple and it seems pretty full but knowing gm its probably some odd number and a quart is just not enough. so how much does the tranny take?

no im talking about filling the transmission with fluid not the motor thanks tho.
Well, considering the engine takes 4 quarts for an oil change . . . . . The quanity given is correct for the transmission and you really want to use syncromesh, not royal purple. It will shift easier and operate quieter with syncromesh fluid.
Post reads "isuzu fluid fill" I made the 2.5 reference because thats what manual transmission they come with. The Isuzu has an aluminum end cap with 7 bolts holding it on... it takes 2.4L (5.4US pints) .....a little over 2 US quarts of manual transmission fluid. If it were a six banger it would have a 5 speed Muncie, identefied by a steel end cap with 9 bolts...It holds 1.9 L (4.0 US pints). Syncromesh recommended for both. If it is a 4 speed it will take 2.8L (6.0 US pints) of GLS fluid which is a different fluid all together. These are all manual TRANSMISSION capacities. OIL capacities are for another thread.

Better yet, how do you drain the old fluid from the Isuzu? Is there a drain hole or do you have to crack the unit open? My Muncie has a drain bolt, but I don't see one on the Isuzu...

The drain plug on an Isuzu is on the left side bottom of transaxle case just below the inner CV joint. Its 22 mm I think but 15/16 wrench worked for me. They are not meant to be super tight so usually not hard to get off unless some knuckle dragger cranked it down before you started servicing it. After reading all the horror stories about the "little gear falling off" I fill mine through the top hole left side of tranny case. After removing the plug.. there is a little spring in there, I take it out....make a tight fitting funnel out of the pennzoil syncromesh fluid bottle with the bottom cut out....and I add 2 quarts of fluid....no runs...no drips...no errors....no little gears to fall off anywhere. Thats my experience yours may be different.
Any thoughts on other synchromesh fluids? I can't find Royal Purple out here... what do we think of Penzoil(sp?) That is 6.99/qt.. I need to do this job here real soon.
