I am going to be doing an engine swap soon. While the motor is out I want to adjust the tension of the decklid springs to the lid will stay up more securely. What is the best way to do this? Should the decklid mounted, or not, during adjustment?

I have never adjusted the spring, but if you have the rear spoiler, it is probably maxed out now. I'd look into the strut rod kit for the decklid and get rid of the factory spring. Plus, they look more modern.

No rear spoiler. Just heavy Mera decklid. The springs are currently not in the maxed out position. I think one setting tighter would be all I need.

I am considering the strut rods, but I would really like to keep the stock look if possible. I just want to know the best way to adjust them.

When you have the engine out, the easy way is to take a long prybar and put the end up into the hinge box and pull the end of the torsion spring away from the firewall. You can only go a little bit before you must pull the pin, and then you are committed until you pull it far enough to slide the pin back in.

It is good to keep a large diameter phillips screw driver handy incase you drop the pin... not that that would ever happen.

This is one of the best threads that I've seen on here for how to adjust them.

I have also read there are three different springs for the car depending on spoiler, luggage rack, or decklid only. How do I know which one I have? My car is a Mera built off a GT. They could be either wingless or winged. I don't know how it was equipped originally. Does anyone know the option code for the wing on an 88?

The springs are identified by color depending on which decklid configuration the car came with.

From Fiero ONline Service Guide:

Red = plain
White = Spoiler (D80)
Blue = Luggage carrier (V56)

1984-88 ROD, rear compartment (red) 20569435 LH
1984-88 ROD, rear compartment (red) 20569434 RH

1985-88 ROD, rear compartment (white) 20380984 RH N.L.A.
1985-88 ROD, rear compartment (white) 20380985 LH N.L.A.

1984-88 ROD, rear compartment (blue) 20355088 RH
