When I was working on my swap, I found out that the shifter cable would not snap back on the metal plate on the tranny. Upon closer look the tabs on the inner part of the cable were damaged. The fix was easy.

1. Remove the shifter arm from the trans.
2. Us a grinding wheel or grinding bit on a drill and remove the head of the rivet on the under side of the shifter arm. Grind just enough to make it flat.
3. Place the shifter plate on a socket with the "stem" down in the socket. Use a punch and hammer to knock out the "stem" from the under side.
4. Find a bolt that is the same length and diameter as the "stem", a washer for the head of the bolt, and a nylon lock nut for the bolt.
5. Place washer on bolt and push the bolt and washer through the shifter plate.
6. Place shifter cable over the bolt and shifter plate.
7. Thread on nylon lock nut. DO NOT over tighten. You want the cable to spin easily on the bolt but engage the nylon "lock" in the nut.
8. re-install shifter plate/cable assembly to tranny.

Have a beer. this is better than new.
