We remove age baked on decals with a 3M erasure wheel available at larger auto parts stores. It's a rubber erasure like material in a wheel shape that attached to your drill. Start at one end and work your way into the decal, after you've removed the decal use some 3M adhesive remover. It makes a bit of a mess just like a pencil erasure but it's totally effective and won't hurt the finish. Matter of fact, the paint under the decal that you've just removed will be as perfect as the day the decal was put on so you'll need to polish up the paint on each side of the old decal. The wheels are really cheap as I remembered.

Heat guns get extremley hot (hot enough to melt plastic),I was told to use a hair dryer, but Im skeptical if that will work on backed on decals.....just my 2 cents.

What kind of striping are you talking about ? the simple 2 line stripes on a lot of cars, or some kind of graphics ? Heat gun on low setting usually is enough to heat it up. You only want it hot enough to soften the adhesive...not to where its too hot to touch. Eraser wheel works pretty well too. On OEM type stripes, i use a new single edge razor blade layed flat to take off the stripe (like shaving), then cleaner to get off adhesive. If you get the angle right, it can be done in just a couple of minutes with no damage to the paint.
