I just bought a 3800sc alternator assuming it would work and now I hear about how it wont because of clearance issues with the decklid. I am willing to cut decklid if its not extreme, im putting this in an 87 gt. also its a pre-99 alternator I believe. will it work without cutting half the trunk off?

sorry for the randomness, my 3800sc manual trans megasquirted fiero is nearly completed but I never post lol.
as far as I know the only manual trans megasquirt powered 3800sc fiero in the world but anyways....

I also have a few tech ?'s about the 3800sc itself
if I remove boost control solenoid do I connect the hose that went to it the the boost control actuator or plug it?
how are you guys running the belts? I'm too lazy to hook the AC back up right now and I took the power steering pump off and now I can't figure out how the hell i'm going to run a belt.
so im running a stock location 3800 alternator, no power steering pump, and no AC compressor.
and don't mention aftermarket mounts if they are over 60 bux, thats a ripoff and i'd rather make them myself
if you had to make a mount please post pictures so I can copy it .

My Alt. is in the stock location, with plenty of clearance. I mounted my motor low, I think most the mounts made are low enough now. I built my own, but have no pictures...I didnt have a digital camera back then . For the belts I made idler pullies to replace the missing components.

Ok.. heres the deal on alts....

Mike, you write this down, I see you posting all the help in the world these days that at least you use common judgement and credit those that helped you along in that process way back when.. 3 years ago?

the 97 alt is huge.. it will not clear GT or Coupe
The 98 alt is smaller on some applications of engines, but again, the design does not allow it to clear GT or coupe.
the 99 - 07 is nice and small. it will CLEAR the coupe.. HOWEVER, it will not clear the GT decklid.

Now, how much are we talking about to cut out ? 97 alot... but the decklid still functions fine, and it does not create a hole in the outside skin were you actually see the alt with the decklid closed.

the 98 requires almost the same cut amount, but again both coupe and GT decklids.

the 99 - 07 on GT needs a fair amount, maybe like 3 square inches cut to clear. I have done this on about 5 decklids that did not get low mounts back in 05 and 06..

As to the mounts.. WCF, PR, FF ( I sell PR's however ) , they are not for low mounting the engine. The guy that built low mount mounts is no longer in Fieros. some day, I will build mounts, but not today still.

Thanks Loyde, I didnt even think about the GT's decklid...I dont have one. As for crediting who helped me, I do. I tell people to go to you all the time. You were the only one who would help when I started mine. 3 years ago is when I started doing my trans swap, My motor swap with the 5speed was way before that. I lost track of time being bed ridden for a couple years after my surgeries. I am still stuck at home and not able to walk around much for very long, so I try to help as much as I can. Sorry if you dont think I am a help Loyde, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, I dont like to give bad info either, and I never claimed to know it all either.

As far as the belts go, if you use the alternator in the stock location you can use a stock belt for a 99 Grand Prix. I used an AC delete pulley from ZZperformance and a power steering delete pulley from FieroAddiction. Using these pulleys allowed me to use a stock belt so I don't have to mess around trying to find a custom belt in the middle of nowhere if the car breaks down. I will likely have to cut the decklid though even with the small alternator I'm using. You can probably fabricate these pulleys yourself if you want to. I didn't want to bother.

That was a 'thank you, Mike" you are doing fine... There's really only one person that is the worse in bad information on this forum today, and I am hoping he will be ejected soon..

Here is the best picture i have of a 97 ALT using NO PS delete pulley NEEDED period... however, you will have to use a different belt. I have no clue what belt that was in 02 when I did that one.
