Hello all again. well i am changing my tranny fluid and when i went to advanced auto i was kinda disturbed when i found out that not only does it use auto fluid but also only 1 1/2 Qt. is this right? it also told me to use dextron 2. well i dont know the diff between dex 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,---9999 and really didnt care. so i bought max life. it was the best they had.

The 4-speed is 5.9 pints. Dexron and 5-30 motor oil were the recommended fluids for the manual transmissions when the Fiero was built 25 years ago. Some years later, GM started recommending synchromesh transmission fluids as they became available. AC Delco, Penzoil, Quaker State, Texaco, AMSoil manufacturers all have their synchromesh fluids.

I'm surprised Advance Auto doesn't have any of these proper fluids.

Taken from Ogres Fiero cave:

"DO NOT USE ANY AMOUNT OF ATF IN ANY MODEL YEAR. THE USE OF ATF MAY CAUSE GEAR CLASH AND RESULT IN SYNCHRONIZER DAMAGE. (Direct Quote, GM even put it all cap’s in the TSB.)"

As stated above, you should be using Syncromesh Fluid. There was a TSB a while back that stated to use Syncromesh in all Fiero Manual Transmissions.

When I was a kid back in the 60's, my neighbor was a stock car racer, and a consistent winner. He told me during one of our chats that you could put about anything you wanted in there if you added a couple pints of STP. STP has been in every straight trans I've ever owned, including my Fiero with synchromesh, and I've never lost one. And I'm 60. I once heard many years ago that all 33 cars starting the Indy 500 had STP in the gearboxes.

I was surprised to find that out, too. However, AutoZone sells the Pennzoil synchromesh oil.

I've run Mobil One 5w30 for the last 120,000 miles in the current 4 speed, 60,000 in the previous 4 speed before that car got hit by a Buick.

I've not experienced any problems.

I ran Mobil 1 5-30 before too. I found Synchromesh is better, made shifting even smoother.

Go to autozone for syncromesh. For some stupid reason advance doesn't carry it. I work at advance and half my managers somehow don't even know what it is.

It is SO annoying going to "Auto Stores" and deal with guys who don't know what they're doing. While I can forgive them for not knowing each nut and bolt and every quirk the Fiero has, they should have some knowledge about their general products like fluids. If they carry Pennzoil motor oil, all they have to do is look up Tranmission Syncromesh Oil/Fluid in their catalog.
