if its all the gears, I would say the the clutch isnt moving enough. if its just the gears in direction of shifting, as in all the gears with the shifter pushed forward, or pulled back - then I'd say cable adjustment, or bad shift cable. if the pressure plate was bad, you'd have slipping - it only goes bad one way - softer if it was the throwout bearing, you should be able to hear it screeeeming, especially when puh\shing in the clutch

In another car I have some of the fingers broke on the pressure plate, the result was that 1/4 of the circumference of the pressure plate wouldn't release even though the throwout bearing travel was more than sufficient for release.

Exact same set up as your friends. Did you fix the issue? If so, what was the issue? How did you fix it? The rear end of my car is in the air, but I have not disconnected anything YET.
