I have heard bad things about the reliability of the transmissions that accompanied the Cadillac 4.5 thru 4.9 engines.
Is there a grain of truth to these rumors?
I have heard several times: ”Oh, you have a Fiero? I heard they catch fire a lot.”
Where there’s no smoke, there’s no fire.

1990 4t60 and 1991-95 4t60e transmissions are very reliable, because they are HD transmissions. if you need an auto tranny with a heavy duty build and is vacuum controlled, use a 1990 caddy tranny. if you need one that is electronically controlled and you have a computer that can control it, use the 4t60e trannies from 91-95 caddy's

Perhaps the horror stories were about pre 1990 models?
They would probably have been Cadillac's first tranverse front drivers.

AMost of the problems with the GM overdrive both the L's & T's were pretty well cured by 1988. Pretty solid after then.

A well maintained 4T60E is tough as nails. I have beat on my 4.9 / 4T60E regularly for 3 years now will no ill effects.
