Well everyone has seen or heard of the direct plug in replacement MSD Blaster II Coil for the Fiero. Well MSD seems to have updated the design, thankfully they kept the same plugs, but the install is different, you have to assemble the sides and then adapt the old bracket to the new coil. I don't have the specs on whether they improved the power or not, but I am sure they had a reason to update the design. Price seem to be unchanged and even the part number is the same. Our local guys buy from Performance Parts Centre in Langley BC. www.captfiero.com/ppc

Both cars have MSD Caps, MSD Wires and MSD Rotors. I just wish MSD made an ignition module that worked on these cars. We just spent 2 days tracking down a problem that turned out to be an intermittent problem with a 3 month old generic ignition module.

Looks like the new design is too close to the EGR valve. With no heat shield the operative words are "melt down". I for one do not like the placement apparently required on the 2.8

New design looks like its cheaper and easier for them to manufacture (mounting bracket uses a LOT less metal). I have the first design, has worked great for years.

Appears you may need to cut and properly splice a new connector on that Coil plug. I can see that thing working loose and causing another 'intermittent' problem you'll be hunting down.

There is heat wrap on the exhaust pipe which is much more effective than the heat shield.

I don't know about cheaper to make, but it sure looks like a better design than the original.

As for plugs, I should update the pic as I took it before we started working on things. We installed a new plug, and then zap strapped the new plugs down so they could not even wiggle and cause any issues.

... and heat wrap plus the original heat shield will be more effective than either alone.

Couldn't you mount the coil on the other side of those aluminum stands? It would space it further away from the EGR valve if you did so.
