i believe the electrical switch for the ignition is slowly migrating away from the lock cylinder. every couple of months i drop the column, adjust the switch so it operates easily and tighten it down, and it works very well for about a month. then it starts getting finicky, giving me the familiar click-no start, and eventually doing nothing. at this point i drop the steering column, adjust the switch, and everything works fine again.

i don't want to strip the mounting studs or nuts, but there's got to be a way to keep the switch from creeping. anyone fixed this issue?

84, manual, tilt.

It sounds like the "rack" is breaking in the tilt

You need a new one of these:

I haven't been able to do a repair thread on the column yet, but if you're halfway mechanical you can figure it out from my column thread, start at the end and don't disassemble subassemblies if possible:

great writeup, which i had heard of but never seen.
i'd give you a plus too, but youve had one for a long time.
i may have a look at it this weekend. i want to sell this car and little things keep breaking, very frustrating.
thanks for all the work youve done on this.
