This is getting pretty annoying. On cold start up, especially on a chilly or wet day. The car with fire up and if gas isn't applied immediately the car will idle rough for a second then choke itself and stall. If I stab the gas a few times and clear it's throat it is fine though. I've also noticed the car will exhaust vapor even on mildly chilly days, not just the typical ice cold days.
It was never an issue until I replaced the air cleaner with a fram.
Really don't think the air cleaner has anything to do with it. Unless, you didn't happen to know the plug off the air temp sensor on the can? (V6 correct?)
Other possibilities, IAC sticky...
My 2 cents..

I agree, varnish buildup on the pivot pin of the butterfly can cause the throttle to stick.Allso spray some throttle body cleaner into the port on the inside base of the throttle body.
