Got my 84 4cyl. out for the first time this year. It started right up ,good solid idle ,so I head out and about 1/2 mile away at 40mph the gauges all peg to the right, the lights flicker and I pull over. The car never died,I went back home ,it didn't happen on the way back.

I checked for a blown fuse, battery cables , every things looks OK.
IT starts right up ,no hesitation at all, sounds great.

I'm afraid to take it out and something major happens. Any ideas?

PS: New starter, alternator.rear brake lines, battery cables last fall.

Recheck all your cable connections to make sure they're tight. Generally, fluctuating voltage is either a loose cable at the battery or alternator, or a dying voltage regulator inside the alternator itself.
