You guys have helped me out before on my Fiero and i see many have swapped to 3800 motors. My question is this my son wants to buy a 99 Firebird with a 3800 100.000 miles. How many miles will this motor usally go before it needs overhaul is it dependable, gas mileage? Thanks for any input Paul
From my experience with them, they're relatively bullet proof motors treated properly. Decent power and I believe about 25mpg. Definately a nice peppy dependable motor. Then again, I'm no engine pro and have had only good experiences with these motors. =)
I've heard well over 200,000 if treated right. Supposedly the best V6 you can get from GM. I believe it's discontinued now. I guess they don't want there cars to last too long.
As long as they are taken care of, I have also heard of over 200K. I was out looking for a "new" car over the last few weeks and drove a few 150,000 mile 3800 engines, and all felt pretty good. I have a supercharged with 120K and a non with 105,000 and both run very well.
I had a few Chryslers that were lucky to make it to 100k. By comparison, the 3800 is just breaking in- in my opinion.
