how does the ignition control module come off? doese look like bolts but rivots of some sort?

Those are screws holding the ignition module down. I've seen them in hex head and screw head.

Screws - not bolts.
You take the screws out from the top. The distributor base is threaded.

Now, it's possible the threads were stripped out sometime in the past and someone is using bolts. No telling what changes could have happened over the years. But it should be screws.

They should be on the top.
