OK I thought it was the battery hitting the firewall because it wasn't tied down, but I took care of that and it's still happening. Whenever the car surges forward a little something back there makes a "knock" sound, usually when I'm letting out the clutch in first, etc. but even with my foot off the clutch I can get it to do it at very low RPM. It sounds like its coming from below or behind the passenger seat. Anyone have any ideas what might be loose? 87GT 5spd.

A knock not a clunk. If it were a clunk I would suspect ball joints.

I am certain that others will chime in.

I think the dog bone/front engine mount is your best bet because I have the same problem as you. You can find these easily.

I have the same thing on my 85Gt.
I know it's not the ball joint, bushings and believe it's not the strut.
My dog bone is good and has polly bushings.
Front cradle bushing are good shape and tight.
Think the front engine shock mount could do that?

I'd say mine sound between a knock and a loud pop... You can kind of feel it.

another thing to check is when the motor is cool(obviously) try and rock it back and forth and also do the same thing with the exhaust.

Thanks all. Good suggestions. I was thinking along the lines of a motor mount. It sounds like whatever it is is very close to the passenger compartment, like on the front side of the engine. I'll try to move the engine by hand and see what happens.

I'm in Cary, essentially Raleigh. I think we're about 2 hrs away from each other.

You might even get lucky, I had a 91 Taurus SHO that was clunkin like that so I was about to order new mounts but before, I crawled under and 2 bolts had come out of the mounts. 2 new bolts and problem was solved. If you have a garage, just get under and start lookin and grabbin things...eventually you will find it. Good luck

Would a bad cradle bushing allow for that kind of noise?

Im sure it probably would but I would think you would also feel the ass end wiggle too..wouldnt ya? Im sure this would drive a person nuts but I still think the best way is to just get under there with a GOOD light and start pushin and pullin on everything.
