The car is an '84 2m4 with the 4 speed manual transmission.

I just finished rebuilding the engine and tried to start it tonight, I got spark and it cranks over nice, but no fuel. The fuel pump does not turn on with the key.
The fuses are all accounted for and in good condition.
All of the ignition wires power up with the ignition switch.

What is the next thing to check for a non-working fuel pump? It worked fine when it was parked...

Also, I have a severe electrical problem with the lights.
1. The hazard switch does nothing.
2. When turning on the right blinkers, they work properly: 2 lights in the tail lights, 1 rear-side marker, 1 front-side marker, and the front blinker.
3. When turning on the left blinkers, EVERY parking light turns on and blinks to the steady beat of the blinker. The only lights that do not turn on on the outside of the car are the reverse lights and the headlights. But every other light in the tail lights and marker lights turn on.
4. The turn signal/wiper control stalk on the steering column is really finicky and almost feels loose.

Any ideas on this one? I replaced the 2 relays inside the engine compartment because they tested poorly, but still no solution.

Also, there was a mouse nest behind the passenger side tail light, but no visible chewed-through wires.

I could use some possible direction on these two serious problems!

Thanks for all of your help.

You my friend have a classic case of "Poor ground syndrome". Either you are missing a ground after the build, or you installed dirty grounds. It takes less than a piece of papers thickness of grime, grit or corrosion to make a bad ground. Check the battery connections also, they might be tight and all, but same issues apply. Remember, shiny to shiny good, dull and dirty bad.

had almost same "feature" with my Blue 2m4
check the 2 +12v Cables that run under exhaust manifold to the starter 1 of them supplies the main functions like cranking fuelpump ecm ...
the other is for Light turnlight radio and so on .
Had them both burned or corroded 2 times before i rerouted the cable away from the maniflold

Chris, here's a link to a thread with some info about the 84 fuse links at the starter.

well, I figured out the problem with the tail light situation...

The drivers side reverse light had a dual-filament bulb in it, and one of the parking lights right next to it had a single filament bulb in it. I switched them and all is well with the tail lights!! Boy did I ever get lucky with that one.

My fuel pump is still not working correctly though.

If I jump the two outside pins together on the oil pressure light switch sensor the pump comes on and the car will run, but I can't get it to come on with the key the way it is supposed to, or by the fuel pump test wire... Where is the relay for the fuel pump? Does it use one at all?

Thanks!

The fuel pump uses a relay - it's mounted on the drivers side on the firewall. I think you might have a blown fusible link - the two wires that a previous reply mentioned. They are attached to the big stud on the starter solenoid along with the big wire from the battery. If one of the links is blown or if they are not attached, I think that will prevent your fuel pump from coming on.

Hey Chris,

good deal on the tail lights.

Fuel pump relay is one of the four on the firewall by the left rear decklid hinge, not sure which one though, check the wire colors at the relay.

Check this thread for what I found in the relays on my 85 project car.
