I have an aftermarket adapter harness, and a Monsoon CD head unit out of my old 2k Firebird, yet when I finally got to trying to install it and dug into the wiring mess the previous owner left me in the dash, I hit some problems.
They had cobbled, in an aftermarket head unit and I found that the 2-wire plug connector on the under dash harness has been cut off leaving 2 wires, (brown and orange).
I am guessing that that 2-wire connector is switched power and constant power leads?
The aftermarket adapter harness 2-wire lead has an orange and yellow wire. The wiring in the Fiero dash, (87 GT), has an orange wire and a brown wire. When testing the connections it looks like the brown wire goes to the aftermarket orange wire and the Fiero harness orange wire goes to the aftermarket harness yellow wire....(hope this makes sense). When I connect the wires as described, the head unit has switched power from the ignition and the main display works and it plays great, but there is no illumination other than the main display. Swapping the leads gives me illumination of everything on the head unit, but no main display and it will not play and the head unit illumination can't be shut off by key or door switches. Connecting the Fiero harness brown and orange wire together, (did that by accident actually), gives me "full-time" courtesy lights unaffected by the door switches....(I know that isn't right)
I'm in process of reassembly of the car and don't have the headlight swiches, overhead lights and some other dash switches installed yet so I'm asking if I need to install other components before the courtesy light circuit will operate properly, (along with the stereo illumination)....and what wire goes to which on the 2-wire stereo plug???
If you get the notion that I'm a wiring idiot......you're right...but I'm learning, so any clear, concise help will be greatly appreciated.
