Well today was the infamous day that I blew my 2nd Isuzu trans on my 4.9

It was a nice shift from 1st to 2nd and then as rolled on to it, Bang, crash, crunch much. Clazkity.

So it was coasted to the roadside and parked.

Well onto the discussion

The new trans is already in my position seeing as it was a club member that had it and gave it to me for free. I was very pleased.

However this Isuzu has a dipstick on it. no its not a Getrag. He showed me the parts car that it came out of it. It was defiantly on a 4cly 5spd car. The throwout bearing looks a little strange but so be it.

It has the correct Isuzu mount brackets for the cables and the clutch slave bracket seems to be in the right spot.

The noted other things is that the arm, is made from layers of welded metal and a a plastic bushing is where the slave rod would meet it. Kinda weird but I guess it worked.

There is also the greatest strangest things. Like it has a dipstick tubal.

I guess it is just kinda neat to have it there.

It will be going into my 4.9 5spd car.

I hope to get more than 6 months out of it.

Anyone know where this trans could have came from before it was put in a fiero

David

Don't know where it came from, but the steel clutch arm is junk. Put the cast iron arm on it and save yourself a bunch of trouble.

the cast arms have broken in the past also - but without reinforcement the stamped steel one WILL fail in time..

I used the stamped one with much of it welded closed with reinforcements and a metal cup welded inplace of the plastic knob.. its now stronger than a cast arm.. so unless you want to do all that work, use the cast arm

the dipstick trannies came in FWD cars.. so it sounds like that particular car had the tranny replaced as well as a used clutch arm swapped on.

I just picked up a complete running '85 base coupe out of some guys field for $50 it sat there for 11 years.
I killed all the bees and spiders that lived in it put gas and a battery in it and 10 minutes of tinkering later it fired up! I drove it home 10 miles too, though it had 3 of 4 calipers froze up and the heater core was leaking profusely into the pass. floor.
Anyhow point of the story is it has a dipstick on its verifiably stock tranny. guy was original owner and as I thought it was weird I asked if the tranny had ever been swapped and he said no its all original. Maybe early '85's had FWD trannys from the factory, you know before GM had them made for Fiero's?
Best part is this car has flawless seats and dash!!

My concern lies more in the plastic bushing. There is ZERO support at its backside. Just 2 tangs of plastic to hold it in on the front side. I guess it worked. As the car it came out of was driving, well until it hit a brick wall. I don't have pics of the Donor car, but the person that was nice enough to give me the tranny might so I will ask him for pics.

I will take pics of the unit and post them here. Ya know I don't remember the tell tale back up light harness on this one. Hmm.

The throwout bearing was also a strange one.

There is no dipstick in the tube so I am going to have to find one and cut it down to work.

Well I guess I should get off here and go out side need to start cutting the case up to notch it for the caddy's overgrown starter.

Then I am not sure if I want to paint the case red or chrome. The chrome paint I have looks good. But I like the looks of a red transaxle.

Hmm Choices.

Well I will take the camera down and take lots of pics.

Your post snuck in while I was writting my 2nd to last post

Well that would explain the lack of the backup light switch that was on the 86-88 cars.

You could have a point there.

Yes, the FWD Isuzu's have the dipstick and I can't remember the reason why when I searched about it. I picked one up out of an 86 Grand Am to replace my previous Isuzu (which lost 3 gear) for 75 dollars with a 30 day warranty from a local salvage yard.

I know the Getreg is a lot better, but for the price I don't know how the Isuzu can ge beat if you have close to stock power.

Ok car is back together, now I need to find a dipstick for the car. It has the tube, but came with a rag jammed in the dipstick tube.

Anyone know where I can find such an item, what car it might have been used in? Trying to find a fiero with an isuzu and a dipstick tube is going to be harder than finding a Fiero with a factory 4 banger fastback. (saw it with my own eyes, special order you could get a 4cyl in a Fastback GT)

Back to topic, I know this trans must have been used in some GM car in the early 80's I have seen another fiero with an isuzu and a dipstick but have since lost track of that engine and trans combo.

I am tempted to take an auto dipstick and re-mark the lines for full.

Well I ran the car up and down the highway today. The gearing that I so love about the Isuzu is not the same in this tranny........... Grrrrrrrrrrr..........

The good news is that it shifts really well, nice crisp shifts.

The bad news is on the highway doing 65mph it is turning 2500 rpms. Thats almost a 15% increase in rpm over my old Isuzu.

Oh this was measured using a GPS and laptop for speed and a scan tool in the ALDL port to measure RPMS so I know the readings are accurate.
