this comming weekend im gonna tear off the top end of my engine and track down a possible vac. leak,

while its apart im gonna attempt to adjust the rockers and valves

what should i do since i have the intake off?
i figured since it was appart i would pull off the valve covers and re adjust the rockers, and possibly the valves?
im looking for the proper procedure to get the job done
and anything else i should do while its appart?
is there anywhere that i need to put silicone or NOT put silicone when i replace the gaskets?
also liiking for the proper toqure procedire for all of the bolts?

any tips are appreaciated

the reason for wanting to adjust the rockers.... is i have a slight rattle /tick under part throttle and it seems to be comming from the firewall side either the middle or pass side cyl
and it is NOT an exhaust tick it goes way when no load or full throttle .. it is only at part throttle

only thing is... it has done it for like the last 12K miles with out change

the car runs goodm has good power (concidering it is a 171K mile GM product of the 80's)

sound like a rocker??

$Rich$, use the rubber valve cover gaskets, no need to use gasket seal as they don't leak.
My Chiltons calls for valve cover touque specs of 90 inch lbs. (10Nm)

Rich,

I saw your post and haven't had a chance. You know, busy stuff

Anyway, you need to read the Chilton's or Haynes. The only difference is that your parts are broken in so you don't want to tighten the 1&1/2 turns they refer to.

It kind of sounds like you have a loose lifter, but you won't know until you open it up.

You set your TDC on #1 and then check the valves in the order listed then TDC on #4 and so on. You back off the nut until you can wiggle the pushrod back and forth. You then tighten it JUST until you can't wiggle it any more back and forth, and then turn it 1 more full turn tighter.

This is assuming you have stock everything. You can run a search and there have been a few discussions with longer descripts. Also, check Hotrodders.com because they have had a few threads on adjusting the SBC's, if you have converted your valves.

You can get alot fancier, but this will work. Good luck.
