i've had an idea about this for a while but i finally got it done this weekend. on the oil dipstick, if you unbolt the mounting bolt and grind off the tab you can bend the tube below the manifold and then in about the same spot the mounting tab was in make another bend up and around the block. the tube will go between the crossover pipe and the front head. the lift hook will need to be removed but i wasn't using it and it was heavy and annoying anyway. there is a boss on the back of the block for a 10M bolt i used for a line clamp to hold the tube. the tube now exits right in front of the throttle body and is as easy to check the oil as any vehicle. i have two engines and i did notice the dipstick was thinner and easier to use on the 95' engine. i hope this helps someone.

It sounds like your method would work very well. Any pics? When I pull my engine next I will be changing my oil dipstick. I am going to use a dipstick similar to some dodges. They use aircraft cable with a piece of metal either clamped or welded on. This will allow me to make all the bends I want and as sharp as I want.

it's going to be another day. i have the pictures but the guy who ownes the camera left the cable at home. i did pick up a new dipstick from the dealership today. if anyone doesn't have the one with the yellow loop i would recommend getting it. it was only 9 dollars.
one last bump in case anyone missed it. i also tracked down an annoying idle problem to a leaking egr tube. the original was steel and the replacement is stainless, just in case anyone was having the same problem.

i'm on call this weekend so i'll be home waiting for the phone to ring. just give me a call to make sure i'm there. it's a good thing Dave didn't buy the engine from me. i'll show you when you stop over. it's not pretty, but it gives me a good excuse to make some improvements.

thanks for the compliment. the dogbone seems to hold really well. you'll need to remove the exhaust manifold if the engine is in the car, so you might want to get a new gasket. you'll also need to remove the crossover to get the lift bracket out. it was a huge pain getting the dipstick out while in the car, good thing i had a spare engine. i bought a bender at autozone for $12 to bend the tube.
