I happen to have amongst other things a 1987 Volvo 740 Turbo with the stock TDO5 turbo (which I think is trimmed similarly). On the Volvo 2.3, the turbo spools up at like EXACTLY 2000 RPM and will push 11+ psi into the engine despite the large intercooler's pressure drop, though I can't say how efficiently it's doing it. If the Volvo engine is smaller, but has a higher volumetric efficiency (OHC) and revs 500 RPM higher, it may be close to appropriately sized for the task at hand.
Since my Volvo's rear main leaks, I have been considering putting a 2.8 MPFI with a Camaro/Firebird V6 T5 into it with the 2.3's turbo, megasquirted, since many of my colleauges are having success with the unit, even on a 550cc motorcycle.
