For clarification, Your hand-brake is an inert object, therefore it's not stupid,,, need I say more! Ha! (a little joke there)

This information is much needed by me as well. I just bought an 85 Fiero coupe, and the emergency brake cables were not connected, but what was left of them was held up by elastic hook straps! I have the 85 Fiero factory manual and a Haynes manual, but between the two I cannot figure out how to make this all go together. I have bought all new cables, adjuster, bracket, etc, from the Fiero store.

The problem is, when it comes to describing how to put all of this back together, the manuals simply say, "reverse the disassembly procedure". I have to disassembly procedure to reference, because I can't take it apart, because it's not there!

What I don't understand is how pulling the brake cable (via the handle) somehow creates additional tension on the drivers side cable going to the caliper. I can see how it would create tension on the cable going to the passenger side caliper. And when I look at these parts, I'm just not exactly sure how they all go together.

I will try to use these pictures, but I have a feeling I will be back with some questions. Any further insights or info is appreciated.

Thanks,
dmitch

Since the right & left side ebrakes are hooked together via the equalizer (labeled as the adjuster in the above posts), the total length of cable between the two e-brake levers is the sum of the driver's side cable (a set length) and the passenger side cable (set length) plus the part of the front cable between the equalizer & the passenger side cable (the variable length). By pulling the e-brake handle, you shorten the length of cable between the equalizer and the passenger caliper, which in turn shortens the total cable distance between the two e-brake levers. The springs on the ebrake levers cause both levers to move equal to each other.

The springs are key in making the levers more equally. Let's say you shorten the cable 1.5 inches. It would take more force to compress one spring 1" and the other 1/2", versus compressing both springs 3/4" each. That's why the levers move approximately the same amount. If one spring gets compressed more than the other, it will pull back on the other spring to relieve it's own pressure.

That's kind of a clumsy explaination, but I hope it helps you visualize what's going on.
