i see a ton of the 3.1's out of luminas and such. are these swapable? only reason i ask is because they're everywhere and CHEAP! i want a camaro 3.4 but these 3.1 are cheaper and easier to find.
the 3.4 out of the camaro is a pushrod OHV engine, the same design as the 2.8 in the fiero now. The 3.4 DOHC is a totaly different engine, because it has Double Over Head Cams, compaired to the single cam in the 3.4 pushrod, and the 3.1 pushrod

You are halfway there.
The 3.4L DOHC, offered from 1991-1997 in the GM W-body FWD platform, uses the same basic block as every other 60 degree V6, including the 2.8, 3.1, 3.4 OHV, 3400, etc. The block is only different on the insides, and even then it isn't very much. The oil passages are a bit different, and there are a couple other things too that I can't quite remember. But the block is virtually the same.

so the 3.1 can be used for a swap? i see them in luminas, some oldsmobiles, berettas. they look just like the 3.4 dohc motors bujt they're just a 3.1.
Yeah, you could just take a 3.1 block and put all your Fiero stuff on it and it would look stock and work with no other mods necessary.. or use all the original 3.1 stuff but then you have the issue of it not looking stock to the smog refs.. also I think there's wiring to adapt (uses same wiring as the 3.4 DOHC). The 3.4 DOHC motors look nothing like the 3.1.. You're probably thinking of the 3.4 pushrod engine (in the Camaros). The DOHC 3.4 has aluminum heads with huge aluminum cam carriers up top, weird looking valve covers, and a massive long-runner intake. It was available in some Luminas, Monte Carlos, Grand Prixs, and Cuttys. The 3.4 pushrod engine in the Camaros looks a lot like the 3.1.
3.1-3.4 pushrod (same setup as fiero but with different intake and timing covers) FWD i assume this berretta MPFI 3.1 is the one you think looks like the 3.4 DOHC because of the flat intake)
(what you can't really see is that it bolts to the rear bank of intake runners also, the 3.4 dohc has all 6 in one single row in the middle)
RWD
3.4TDC (DOHC)
3100-3400 SFI (came after the 3.4 DOHC)

Do a search on how to make your 2.8 into a 3.1. Lots of info available. Basically you use your 2.8 block and the 3.1 crank, pistons, flywheel, and balancer. If you bore out the block to 0.040" then you have a 3.2L. Typically, the Fiero will have better heads than the 3.1 with cast iron heads. The 3.1 with aluminum heads will need work to allow a swap, like pulley/belt changes and ECM/wiring harness swap because the intake is different.

Remember, you can't use the DOHC heads on a OHV block. The block is unique for the DOHC heads. The basic architecture is the same, but not interchangeable.
