Thought I would post a few pics of my latest project. It's an 84 SE I picked up for a C note and decided to put the engine from my Cavalier in it. The engine is from a 2001 and had 17,000 miles on it when I bought it on E-Bay for $300. It replaced the engine in my 93 Cavalier for the last 6 months. I absolutely couldn't stand driving the crapalier any longer so I pulled the enging and put it in the Fiero. Thought it would be a snap but it had a few quirks and fitment was and is way tight. Fabbed my own front motor mount and had to notch the trunk so the intake would fit. ECM is in the stock location and most of the wiring was done in one weekend. It currently throws a code because I haven't swapped the chip from auto to stick and I didn't jumper the tranny switch. I tried modifing the tach but no luck yet. May try an 87-88 tach as the are already set for the DIS ignition but then have to rewire for the oil pressure gauge instead of the voltmeter. Currently averaging 35 MPG driving pretty hard in town and 80 miles a day on the freeway. Only problem so far has been my modified throttle cable breaking in traffic while blasting past a mudstain.

have fun when the lifters start making noise at like 60,000.
i worked at a tire change and lube firestone a while back, and EVERY one of these things that i changed oil on made the most ticking noise i have ever heard.
but props nonetheless! you have def. made a step over the good ol' boat anchor iron duke!

Just a reminder that this project was started and finished with economy and reliability as the major goals. I have an 88 Formula that will be the speed demon. As far as the lifters go that was never a problem with the 250000 mile engine that came out of my Crapalier that this engine replaced. Keeping heads on them is a problem if you overheat the earlier models. That was fixed when they reversed the coolant flow. Nice thing about this engine is they are super cheap, I got this one for 300 and I see them go for that everyday. That's not even one of my wifes car payments, see where I am going. Modern engine with roller everything and dirt cheap because there are thousands of them in the yards. My next addition will be real long tube headers, courtesy of the Cavalier tuner crowd is the low price of $159.00

maybe this is a good alternative to the iron duke after all!
(im beginning to think that the ones that came into firestone were abused by teenage girls anyway...)

I think it's a decent combo but you have to be willing to make one hard decision. Can I tolerate cutti ng an 8" square hole in the trunk for clearance for the throttle body. I had no problem because this was an almost free car but cutting a hole in a pristine car may be more than some people can stomach. From what I have found the heads were changed in 1999 along with the new plastic intake. You can tell the reverse heads by the steel tube running alongside the head on the exhaust side. One thing I did to make it simpler was to use the wiring and ECM from my 93 Cavalier to avoid OBD2 and the antitheft problems. The stock injectors from the 2002 engine wouldn't work so I had to use Multechs from a 3800. If anyone is interested I can provide all the details and wiring diagrams.

BTW the new Cobalt 2.2..with or without supercharger. ..mates up to the stock standard Fiero tranny.. PLus theres no power steering pump off the cam no more....it went electric. But getting the donor ECM...ouch! Red.

?????? I'd expect it to use the ecotec bolt pattern??
My 86 coupe is coming up on 100K miles soon and I had thought about the 2.2 once but I haven't looked up anything on here yet. Then tonight I find this. Great job. Do you have any pics of the hole you cut? And does anybody know if there is any way to get it done without the cut? Mine is in pretty good shape aside from the leaky sunroof and smokey starts.

Sorry to bring back an old post, but I read about this swap and got pretty interested. I was wondering if you could provide me all the details and wiring diagrams, as I have an '87 4 cylinder coupe. Also, would this bolt up to the Fiero automatic transmision (T-125C)?

love the different swap! I'm not really a fan of the 2.2 cavi motor, i've had to many problems with the ones I've come across, the head gaskets are very weak. As for the ECOTEC Idea, they came in saturn L series beginning in 2000 I think. There should be a few of those in the boneyard since the car would fall apart long before the motor! MAd props for being different man.
