OK, I've got a 2.8 and a getrag sitting outside. Smokes, bad rings most likely so a really good candidate for a rebuild. So If I am going to rebuild it I might as well pep it up a bit...
So is all I need the 3.1 crank to convert up to 3.1, or will I need rods/pistons as well.... And I am planning on buying new pistons anyway so should I buy them for the 2.8 or for the 3.1 motor?
And I dont want 13:1 compression either LOL!

Last year I pepped my 2.8 from the stock 2.8 to a 3.2 with a simple .030" bore job and a 3.1 stroker kit from ARI (www.engine-parts.com ) They have a complete Set to build your 3.1 Stroker for about $495. It includes, rods, pistons, rings, bearings, crank and even a new crank key for your harmonic balancer and crank gear as well as everything else needed. Its a complete kit and I was very happy with the install and help I received. If this is the route you are planning on I have a complete engine available for sale that was just built last year. Its a nice bump in power, but in all actuality you'll probably want more power. Especially once you compare the price of the parts and what not to the cost of a larger engine. Shane

Ya Id agree, for a little bit more you can go to 3.4 or 4.3 and be a lot happier.
What the deal with the 4.3? Thats a totolly different block. Or are you saying that a 3.4 can be bored to 4.3. If so what is the combo to do that cause I have a 3.4 block from a 95 firebird in my car now and it needs to be redone.
The 4.3 V6 is a totally different engine than the 2.8. Since the 4.3 is basically a Chevy small block with a middle cylinder removed on each side, it would require an Archie kit with modifications in order to fit one into a Fiero.
I got a wrecked 93 Centry with a 60,000 mi. 3300 and 4-speed Auto. The 3300 is a 90 deg. like the 4.3 and 3800. Bolts up relativly easy, Trans port axle on one side, Beretta axle on the other.
Kekipi - Thats about what it cost me to rebuild mine once you figure the cost or the machine work, cam, new internals all around and powdercoating. 2000 too much for something I am not completely happy with. But thats the name of the game I guess. Live and learn. Hopefully the new LS1 heads and block will change my mind...

You need a 3.1 crank, flywheel that is neutrally ballanced (off an 88) and pistons to a 3.1 iron head engine. Everything else off the 2.8 stays.

been there - done that - 3.1 crank, '88 flywheel, 3.1 Camaro Hypereutectic pistons, machining, cam, etc....$2000+ with the auto trans, it did 16.1 in the 1/4 mile.

I have a 3.1. I know lots here have done a 3.4 swap. Ive never checked into it very much but I thought there were some guys here with 4.3s (them being the same). Guess I was wrong if there different.
