I was just curious if anyone knows of a rack with a tighter ratio (ie one turn of the wheel will make more tire motion than the orginal setup). I know plenty of cars with tighter ratios, I just doubt any of them would fit in a fiero. Does anyone out there know of something that will work? I dont care if it comes out of a car or if someone sells a modified fiero rack, I just want to try to gather info.

Thanks in advance.

There are two ratios available for the Fiero. 3 turns or 3.75 turns if I remember right. Remember the faster it is the harder it will be to turn.

Would you happen to know which years fiero's came with witch ratio's? Or how you could identify each rack?

Thanks.

I know that it will be harder to turn a rack that's fewer turns from lock to lock, but that doesnt really matter much to me. I was actually looking for something more along the lines of a 2.5/2 turn lock to lock rack. I assume that someone has to know something about a tighter ratio rack considering how many people use the fiero chassis as a kit car base.

No there are no manual racks that will bolt in our Fiero with ratios like that. And you may see them in other cars they are power assisted or full blown race cars. You will not like it in your street car, if you can even steer it down and out of your driveway.
But if you look into the power racks you will see some that have the ratio you are looking for. They are not easy to convert and almost no one sells a kit so you have to do on your own.

The bolt-on power steering rack is the holy grail of Fiero suspension. It hasn't been found yet. There was a group of people working on the f-body rack but I haven't heard anything from them lately. That rack had something like 2.2 turns lock to lock. If it could be made to fit it would be sweet.

I just dusted off my Camaro rack yesterday.
Funny you would bring it up. I have not even scratched paint or made a single chip on it yet but just to size it up after while.
It is an SS rack (WS6) and has 2.25 lock to lock . But about an inch less travle than my 88 rack

According to the book "Fiero" by Gary Witzenburg, '85-'87 Coupe, Sport Coupe, and SE had 22.0:1 ratio. All others had 19.2:1 ratios.

I have a Merkur xr4ti power rack and I think it is around 2.5 turns lock to lock. I'll have to check. There is a night and day difference with the rack The car came with. It was an 86 SE.

Was the Merkur rack difficult to install?
