I was talking to my Brother-in-law (who has been a body man for 15+ years) about how I liked Skitimes Trans-Am fender scoops and, while I was on a junkyard adventure, picked up a set. I showed him them and where I wanted to eventually mount them. He said that if he did it, he wouldn't bother with fiberglass because of the cracking issues that comes with it. He said he would just plastic weld it in. He showed me the handy dandy Craftsman type case that it came in (all of it in its own little compartment, so he had to buy it that way).

My questions are: Has anyone heard of this (I never had before this) or has had it done? Also, how does it compare durability wise to fiberglassing? TIA.

I have heard of it. It's how some places can repair plastic fascia, like those on the Fiero. They just weld them.

However, the durability vs. fiberglassing...no idea. I suppose it depends on what each part is made of. I've never actually done anything like this so I am nothing like an expert on this....

theres a few different kinds of plastic welding.
basicly fuses the two parts together.
there is a rod called fiberflex that bonds very well. you can even twist the parts around and it will not break.
if its a good job it will be just as strong as if it were built in there.
good luck!

Funny, I just did some plastic welding at my uncle's auto body less than a month ago.....
It's fairly straight forward and if done right has the same durability and flexibility as the original product.....

There are different "welding rods" for different types of material.... some rods work with several different materials....

so, if you get a rod that works with both types of plastic, it should work...

Hello FieroJuice,

Altough I have not used this tool, I think your Brother-in-law was describing this tool from the Eastwood Company:

I have never welded plastic so I cant say if will work or not. But I realy like the idea. I may look ito it too.
As far as fiberglassing the plastic I do know this will NOT work. The fiberglass will crack for sure and look like crap in a short time. You can use the correct plastic epoxy that will work.

Thanks for the link (it did kinda look like that) and the opinions.

My B-i-l told me that if I got an extra set of lower fenders (its my daily driver), he would bond the "SkiScoops" to it for me. I may have to go back to that junkyard and pull a set just to see how they turn out.

Well, I went back and the fenders looked horrible, so I passed. I think I will just take mine off when I'm near the painting stage and give them to him since all my vin numbers match, and I kinda like that.
