What transmission did the 3.1 have? Was the 3.1 FWD or RWD?

yes, I think the 88 2.8 is neutrally balanced, and I think all 3.1's are neutrally balanced.

Ask the seller what it is from. IMS, there was a 3.1 in Camaros in the 80's/90's. A flexplate from one of those cars would most likely not fit the 88 2.8. A 3.1 flexplate from a FWD car/van should fit though.
