i am about to look for a fiero chassis for a kit body on order. is there a history of a lot of rust on the floor pan in states where road salt is used. many of my older cars have lost their floors. ex is a 1987 mustang. any comments?

This very simple......
The main areas to be looking will be in the trunk (rear) and engine compartment.
First look under the trunk carpet on the sides of the fenders, this is the big area
that, if there is rust.........It will be there!!

Another place to look is around and under the battery. The tray is big on rusting.
Also, look at the bottom of the trunk under the the truck carpet......

Hope this helps a little. For more info on "rust" use the search button. you'll find more

Good Luck,
Michael

Well since you're in MI, it's probably a huge deal, but just be sure to physically take a look and see if there is any in the undercarage. One of the most trouble spots in a Fiero is the trunk, pull the carpet and check that out.

If you're worried about it, buy a car from the south. Personally I haven't seen any fieros with floorpan problems.

If looking for rust main focus is not on floor, although that will rust. Take back the trunk carpet and look at the inner wheel wells and trunk upper sides. Next would be the door hinge area, down low by the rocker panels. Another area that seems to rust is the front suspension bracing, for some reason these braces don't seem to have the same corosion protection on them. These are the most prone areas for rust on driven Fieros. If the car has st for awhile look at the pinch welds next to the long coolant tubes this area will show rust if the car has been sitting in the weeds for any length of time.
