Does anybody out there have a picture of the fusible link coming off the starter soleniod and one showing where it connects to? Also there is a wire that braches out from my positive battery cable which has been broken in half for quite awhile. Would that be a/the fusible link, where would it go and what does it operate? Once I get my digital camera working I'll try to post a picture of it.

The reason I'm asking is because when I turn the key to the on position the fuel pump does not kick in and everything else checks in okay. I can start the car by dripping fuel in the throttle body and it runs fine after that because of the oil pressure override. Also my battery drains dead when I'm driving. The battery is brand new and I just had the alternator tested and it's fine. One last question...what should my battery gauge be reading at while I'm driving. It currently starts out at 11 and drops to 8 after about ten minutes of driving...then the car dies.

Help....???

cant help with any pics of a stock 84.

but you do have some problems.
about the battery 12~12.8 is ok for a battery at rest. 13~14 is good while the car is running.
the red wire on the stud on the alternator should go straight to the positive battery cable to charge the battery.
check for voltage at the stud if you dont have anything there you have an open in the circuit.

the fuel pump not running when you turn on the key could be computer, fuel pump relay, wires that connect the two.

The wire goes to the same terminal on the starter as the positive battery cable.

There should be two fusible links there total.

I recently rerouted my two fusible links from the starter to the battery terminal using one of those adapters for powering amps right off the battery, it replaces the side terminal bolt with a bolt that has a threaded stud for the aftermarket power hookup.

The reason I did this is that the fusible links don't hold up too well as they would sit above the cat and under the exhaust and get cooked.

I would have to go look at my 84 SE to see what the wire from the battery terminal goes to and it's too cold to dig around in the barn for that right now, sorry. HoHo

Thanks Fierohoho...I was actually looking at your thread the other day and am seriously considering relocating them while I'm at it.

Here's a couple pics on how I relocated the two fusible links that connect to the starter on my 84SE.

Heat had killed the original two fusible links and I had replaced them leaving them in the original location but better protected and then new ones still fried out in a couple years.

The first pic shows the adapter that replaces the bolt in the side terminal positive battery cable. It should be easy to find where ever stereo equipment is sold, I got mine at Radio Shack.

I cut the old fusible links off and spliced on two 5 foot long lengths of a similar size wire, I soldered the connections and sealed the joints with some heat shrink tubing.

I ran the new wires along the fire wall to the battery, trimmed to length and put two new fusible links on the ends, you can buy the new links with a loop terminal allready on the end.

I then hooked them up to the new battery terminal as seen in the second pic.

Since doing this I have had no heat related problems with these links, it may not look stock but it helps keep the car running.

84se-Stock, to answer the other part of your question about the broken wire comming off the positive battery cable,

I looked at mine and then checked my factory 84 service manual and it looks like the wire should go to fusible link "F" which runs to the alternator.

My wiring loom over the battery cable, which you can see in the second pic, has the link poking out of it.

If your car is still set up the same I would have to guess your battery isn't charging, if the battery is charging I don't know what to tell you.

Wrench on dudes, HoHo

Glad to hear we could help.

So what all did you have to do?

Does it run good and is the battery charging?

Don't leave us hanging, "Dammit, we need details man!"

Haven't been home yet to see how it was fixed...dad decided to tackle the project against my better wishes. Car apparently starts perfectly, runs great and is charging as it's supposed to be.
