This 3.1L is not presently in a Fiero, but... I trust the feedback from you folks. (My Fiero is running fine)

My daughter's car is a Chevy Lumina APV. (And, of course, I get the pleasure of working on this silly thing)

It was barely running with no power. Took off the valve covers and intake manifold to repair an obvious cooling pipe leak, and guess what I saw...
the pushrod is bent and nearly broken on the #3 cyl exhaust valve. I was able to find a new pushrod at AutoZone. (Grinn) Went to install the pushrod and (Woops)it appears the valve is stuck down in the open position.
What could this be? Do I need a new head? Or even a piston? Or a new engine? Anyone have any experience with this malady?...or any ideas of what to expect next?

Sounds like a bent valve. At this point the head has to come off regardless, so you might as well pull them both and find out why the valve got bent. A top-end gasket set with head gaskets will run $60-70 in FelPro, I found AutoZone to have the cheapest prices on Felpro.

Thanks JazzMan...

You always come through.

Couldn't you have given me better news?

Is the 3.1 a zero clearence engine? That might mean a piston too.

(sigh) I'll get started pulling the heads in a few minutes. Once I get those off I'll find out if anything else is damaged inside.

I guess I could use this as an excuse to put in a Caddy V8 like Cooter is doing.

Thanks

Jim

You were right on the money JazzMan. (As usual)

The valve is bent. Luckily, the valve did no apparent damage to the piston. I guess the 3.1 is not a zero clearance engine.

Thanks for the advice.
