Were the key blanks for a 86SE all metal or did they have black plastic molded at the end of the key?

They had the black plastic.

You can get them either way. 86 was still using A and B blanks.

I've got the factory keys for my '86 and they don't have a cover on them.

Some hardware stores carry exact replica key covers. I found some that had the GM symbol that were available in black and also red.
