Best guess. The fan sesor in the engine compartment supplies ground to the coil of the fan relay. Then the relay changes state and 12 volts is applied to the fan. Did I guess right?

Yes. Fan relay (ahead of RHS headlight) is always powered - at least, one contact is always "hot."

The relay's coil, on the other hand, is supplied with +12v only when ignition is on; ground other side of coil (green/white stripe wire), and the contacts close, which turns on the fan.

...so simple, it's a breeze
