I found a low mileage 2000 Northstar engine. I want to put it in my 86GT. I have a few questions before buying it.

1. I plan to use the Holley Commander 950 ecm from CHRFab. Has anyone used this with a 2000 or newer Northstar? I e-mailed chrfab but haven't received a response.

2. I want to use a manual tranny. Can I use my existing 4spd? Would a Getrag 5spd work better with the Northstar?

3. I would like to swap in an 88 cradle. From what I've read, this might not be possible with a Northstar. Does anyone have any thougths on this?

Check out the info at http://www.fierodrivers.com/forum/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=765
The swap isn't finished but you will get a lot of good info there.

You can use the 88 cradle (with the rest of the 88 suspension and brakes) without a problem. The problem with the 88 is the strut towers have less room between them than earlier models (having to remount the engine and transmission to the left on 88). You shouldn't have this problem.

Please spare me the criticism, the work isn't finished yet.

Actually, it won't work. The Holley is an entry level system designed to work with a distributor V8. It works with the '99 and older N* engines because the ICM on those engines acts like an electronic distributor. The MY2K and later engines changed the crank sensor configuration, did away with the ICM, and went to coil-per-cylinder ignition. They need a more advanced computer to operate them. CHRFab sells TEC3's for this purpose. A GenVII Accel DFI might be able to handle it, too.

The Getrag works fine. According to wcapman, the 4 speed shift cables interfere with the Northstar water manifold. I haven't tried an Isuzu, but I think that the long throw out arm on that trans would also interfere with the water manifold.

Nothing wrong with the '88 cradle. It will take just as many mods to make a N* fit there as it will to make it fit and early cradle. Like Aaron said, the '88 chassis is wherein the difficulties lie.

'87 Fiero GT: Northstar, Getrag, TGP wheels, rear sway bar, rod end links, bushings, etc.
'90 Pontiac 6000 SE AWD: Leaking ABS unit fixed, load levelling rear suspension fixed, still slow
