My fiero has the AC in it. I'm wondering how hard it would be to swap in a non HVAC control system.

My AC is busted, and I really would like to just take all the AC crap out to save some weight. I never really needed the AC being in the north and having a sunroof and all!

Is it possable to just swap them? My 84 wich had no AC was not servo driven. Was there ever a push button Non HVAC control?

TIA, hope this makes sence !

Yes, it is possible. I did the opposite. I got a juckyard car with A/C and put it in my car. All of the connectors are there for you to plug, (or un-plug), to make it look factory. I'm lucky, I have a friend with a junkyard. He dropped off the doaner car and picked-up what was left. I hope you're also considering resale value? But hey... it's your car.

Cool,
Does anyone have pictures of the non AC servo operated HVAC controls? I have only seen AC ones.

Also whats a common name for this part? So I can start asking around for one...

Looks like the ones without A/C are all mechanical control of vents.

I believe you will have to change your entire heater case assembly. I haven't done a Fiero unit yet, but I have done other GM cars and the control system is completely different. As spark1 mentioned, the non-A/C controls are mechanical.....a cable handles the change of position for defrost/vent/heater, where vacuum handles that for the A/C system. The hot/cold is a cable on both. The vacuum controls cannot be changed over from vacuum to cable. You'll have to change over the entire system.

If all you are trying to do is save weight, just pull out your compressor and as many lines as you can. There isn't too much weight difference in the heater cases, so if you leave that, you'll be ok.

When you get around to doing a Fiero the first thing you will notice is that it doesn't use vacuum. It uses electric servo motors to open and close the dampers. Quite sophisticated for an 80s car. I guess they didn't want to deal with running another vacuum line forward from the engine.

When I converted to the Firebird dash I had to dump the clunky vacuum operated controls from the firebird and replace them with an electrical rotary switch.

D*amn, thats what I was not hoping for . So those are the only two HVAC control units that came in the fiero?

What did say an 88 fiero without AC look like? Same as an 84 without?

Im not looking to switch the controls to save weight. I'd just like a matching non AC unit if my car doesnt have AC.

Oh an not to be picky or anything, I'm pretty sure the fiero controls dont work off vacume. I could be wrong though.

You could get a black Sharpie and black out the words "air cond" and it would match.

When I got my white 88 coupe years back, thats the first thing my father noticed. He was kind of impressed by it. He has been working with automotive AC related servo stuff for 10+ years.
