Has anybody had any experience with having a higher set of final drive gears cut for the Getrag. Like 3.08, this ratio would be a little nicer with a big torqe engin like my 4.9.

------------------
88 GT, 4.9 Caddy v8, Getrag 5 speed, and a whole lot more.

Contact one of your local transmission shops. There are usually multiple final sets for any given transmission. They can tell you what sets are already available. Installing one then becomes a standard bit of service work.

Having a custom gear set made is very expensive. Cutting the gear is the easy part, polishing all the teeth eats allot of time and resources. Every tooth on a gear is a bearing surface. The better the polish, the longer the gear will last.

Ahh, so it might be possible to modify an existing set of gears to fit the shafts, provided their overall size is correct to fit the case.

There are two sets of final drive gears for the Getrag: 3.61 and 3.94

The 3.61 was used in Fieros and V6 applications. The 3.94 was used with HO Quad 4's.

The pinion is made onto the end of the output shaft, so a new pinion requires a whole new output shaft.

Why does everyone think that a random gear from a random transmission has a chance in heck of fitting?

some cavaliers/berettas/Z24's came with 3.42 final drive gears and I read a Kitcar article from '95 in a lambo conversion where a guy did also did a v8 conversion and swapped in 3.23 gears

no other details were given

Any idea how to identify the baretta tranaxles that had the lower gear ratio? I have one I'm getting ready to swap with my Fiero Getrag. Be nice to know. Guess I could count revs but even 4th gear isn't 1:1

I'm pretty sure anything like that with a ratio that's not 3.61 or 3.94 is an Isuzu, not a Getrag. There were half a dozen or more FD's used with the Isuzu. There were also some 3.94 Isuzus... I think.
www.mantapart.com lists about 3 FD ratios for the Isuzu.

In all the years I have worked with the Getrags I have never heard of any taller ratios. Just the 3.61 and the rare 3.94. There are a few Webster gears that are lower but the case has to be radically modified. 4.33 I believe and maybe another one even lower. Maybe someone send Mantapart an email and see what they say. Mantapart@aol.com I think. Maybe there is an aftermarket gear available? I doubt it though. They should know if anyone would. I even emailed Getrag in Germany years ago and they said no.
