I just purchased a 1988 GT and it has a blown subwoofer in the passenger foot well. Does anyone have experience getting this speaker out? There are eight very short 1/4" hex screws around the outside and four hex screws in the face of the speaker facing straight down. The four face screws seem to be the key to getting the speaker out, but they're set up into the face and I haven't been able to get a socket on them. A 6mm is too small and a 7mm too large, as is a 1/4". Can someone please tell me what size the darn things are?

Thanks,

Neil F

Try using a 9/32 socket or a T25 Torx screwdriver.

It isn't very hard to remove the whole box... 2 bolts, if memory serves. I think all you need is a 10mm socket. Then pull it down and seperate the connector. Then getting at the speaker is ever so much simpler. Watch out for the snorkel.

I had the same thing happen to my subwoofer a few months ago. You can send the speaker out for re-covering(?) or purchase a new one. I bought a new one at
http://www.rodneydickman.com/retail.html

for $36+shipping. It arrived in 3 days. Works well, too. Others on the Forum have also been pleased with it.

Here's a picture of the stock unit.

In Rodney's kit, you have to drill 4 new holes in the steel mount plate. I was hesitant at first, but the modification doesn't prevent you from ever going back to an OEM speaker. The most difficult part of reassembly was installing the 8 short screws that mount the speaker base to the woofer box.

Welcome to the Forum!

Rodney's speaker is probably as close as we could get to an OEM replacement speaker anyway.

Whatever you do, DO NOT buy the POS subwoofer(as they call it) from the Fiero Store. I bought one and sent it back. didnt mount properly, seal well, and was just a regular old speaker. BUy Rodney's if you want to replace it. Heard nothing but good about it.

As for the screws. It was a b*tch for me also. Sears has those standard socket wrenches. Looks like a regulat screwdriver, with an open socket on the end. They have a thinner wall then most sockets and will fit right in those four speaker end holes with ease. Just remove the ones around the perimeter, then pull that speaker and cover off. Take it to sears, and use their wrench to pop it off. you can then buy yhe wrench,OR just go back up there when you want to replace the speaker.

Neil,

OHH yeah.. I have that screwdriver/socket on the floor at the house. If you want to send me an E-Mail directly (reminder). I'll take a pic and let you know the exact size it was.

Thanks to all who replied. Getting the whole unit down was the key.

Not sure if your done with this or not. But I have just done this as well. Take out the entire assembly, its much easier to work with. And BUY RODNEYS kit. If you want to use a different speaker, at least get his gaskets, it makes things easier.

This is also all for those without many resources. If you want the easiest, plug and play, Call Rodney.
