Ok, I know there are many threads concerning ignition trouble, but I'm a definite newbie and may need a little extra help. My 85 GT died while idling, no stutter just quit, and now it won't start. It turns over fine but there is no spark. I've checked the ignition coil, the pick-up coil, the ignition module, and the fusible link and all seem to be fine.
Please post any ideas on what I've missed, Thanks.

Can you hear the fuel pump running when you first turn the key on? How do you know you have no spark? Do you have any other symptoms? Welcome to the forum, the more you tell us the better we can help you.

I can hear the fuel pump running. I tested the the spark by disconnecting the coil wire from the distributor and holding it close to the frame. I also sprayed a little starter fluid in the intake, didn't even putt. Prior to it stopping, the engine was idling rather high, 1500, and the exhaust manifold would glow before the engine warmed up. I checked for an error code when I couldn't restart it, but didn't get one.
Thank you for your help

Oh yeah, When I had Autozone test the ignition module they said it passed, but that it was a bit "sluggish." Maybe I should go ahead and replace it. Should I have the ecm tested?

I just tested the resistance of the the distrubutor to coil wire, to make sure it wasn't broken, and got 350 ohms. I also checked to see that the coil is getting power, and it is. Anything else?

Almost bet you that the ign module is bad. The ecm gets it's signal when to fire the injectors from the module. Don't mess around...buy a GM module. Yes it could be the ecm...but no way to check it really unless you have a scan tool. Not possible to take it out and have it checked.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! Replaced the ignition module and it still won't start. I can smell gas after cranking it, so that's not a problem. I checked the pick-up coil by hooking up a voltmeter on a low AC scale and cranking the engine, what what should the voltage be? I don't think that's the problem though

I have had 2 problems with ignition. The first time sounds a lot like what you are going through and it turned out to be the pick-up coil. It is probably only about $13 at autozone so replacing it is a good idea if there is any doubt it. The second time it was the ignition module, it was only about a year old and I had bought it from Autozone. They tested it and said it was bad and I got a new one for free because it came with a life time warranty.

Yeah! I got it up and running, a little rough, idling at 2000, but running none the less. Turned out that the connector on the ignition coil that connects to the control module was not making contact, the contact on the inside of the coil was bent. A little twist with the needle nose pliers fixed the problem. Thanks again to all those people who helped me diagnose the problem
