What is your advice? Does the car run better? more hp? any problems? was it a direct drop in? Can I go to a engine shop by a 3.1 or 3.4 instead of a 2.8, and have the mechanic drop it in with no headache?

a 3.1 from a 91-93 lumina apv or pontiac transport is a direct fit...a 3.4 like i have will bolt in providing you relocate the starter to the other side..you wont see a big gain in hp but you will notice more torque which will make the car alot more fun to drive.on another not if your car is not an 88 you will need to get a new flywheel beings the 3.1/3.4 is internally balanced..if you have an automatic just take the counterweight off..if you go 3.4 with an auto you will need to clearance the block to clear the tranny at the lowest bellhousing bolt at what would be considered the output shaft of the tranny..if your harmonic balancer is in good shape reuse it on either one

You can make your engine a 3.1 (cast iron head 3.1), but putting in the 3.1 crank and pistons. The 3.1 used the same rods. I bought a 3.1 crank kit for $230. A 3.4 that were in the camaro/firebird, however, is not just a drop in replacement. I know because I did this swap on my fiero. It was a RWD engine. The starter is on the wrong side, it must be relocated to the other side of the engine (hardest part), oil pressure sender needs new adapter, harmonic balancer will need new timing mark cut, needs neutrally balanced flywheel (3.4 used 3.1 crank, whichis internally balanced, just like 88 fiero). You can use a 88 fiero flywheel. I used a 1990 lumina 3.1 flywheel, it was much cheaper. I can answer most 3.4 questions you have.

I had a remanufactured 3.1 in my 88 GT auto and it was peppy. Replaced it with a 3.4 and t440 transmission and it too is very peppy. I don't know the swap details, I paid to have it done. Bob Steiger at Twin Lakes did the 3.4 and transmission swap for me.

I'm kinda thinking of the same swap as Old Lar had done. Anyone help with that specific information. the flywheel issue is easy for me to fix its the motor mounts and starter issues I'm intrested in most... thanks

Both are better than a 2.8. The 3.4 has some minor details to take care for which the starter relocation is the most significant. There is plenty of info about these swaps here. Most of it was covered 10-18 months ago. Do a search, read and you will find answers to all your questions. Check Ed Parks web page also for good info on it. I have a 3.4 and I like it but if you want to really feel a difference then go V8 or 3.8SC.
