Yeah. I know it's off topic. Just this once...

Friend's car. 97 Lumina. 3.1. Fuel pump went south.
They're trying to tell her it's $700 to replace it. Also told her it can only be replaced as a unit with the gauge sender.
Autozone even wants $300 for the part.
Is it available as a separate unit like ours?
Or did they completely redesign it?
Anyone have a part number?

Thanks for any help or advice.

Delphi has modularized most fuel tank pump assemblies to make them more cost effective for GM and others to install. (Delphi is the spinoff of Delco and Packard electrical divisions.) Many of these assemblies now include fuel pressure regulation as well as the pump and gauge sender.

I'd have to see the thing to be sure but if that's the only way Autozone can get it then odds are good that's the only way any one can get it. Autozone and others go to allot of trouble to get parts for the lowest costs they can. These modular assemblies are new enough that I don't think anyone rebuilds them yet. (If they even are rebuildable.)

A 97 car..... Are you certain it's out of warantee? Allot of cars had 5 year warrantees by then.

I have no idea what the testing procedures are for that fuel system. Consider getting the book for it or joining ALLDATA DIY for a year (25$us). If you screw up testing on that system you can set the car on fire or cause an explosion.

Thanks, Ogre.
I called NAPA's main store here in Atlanta. They also said that the pump was only sold as an assembly. Their price was $345.
As for testing, the dealer already checked the car and the diagnosis was the fuel pump.
When they told her $700, she told them to forget it.
I will mention the warranty thing to her, but I'm sure she checked.
(BTW, this is an out-of-state friend, so I won't be doing any work on the car. Darn. I gave her a link to this thread, so she may read this, herself.)
As always, thanks for the response.
