No. The earlier 3.1's are 60 degree engines (a 60 degree V between the cylinders) and the later ones are 90 degree engines - different animal.

You could probably make it work but I think it'd be too much fuss.

Actually voyetk the 3.1 from a 96 lumina is a 6 degree engine. Yes it will bolt up to the Fiero tranny and should bolt up to the front mount. However a new dogbone will have to be fabricated. Its not that direct of a swap. Perhaps Joe Torma will see this as he put a 3400 engine in his Fiero which is kind of the same as the 3100 you are asking about.
