Ok, so I've had a problem a lot in the last year with a bad idle that has gotten progessively worse in the last couple of months. Now it is idling at about 350-400 rpm's with the clutch pushed in, and often kills at stops signs/lights, or even going around corners sometimes. It doesn't always do it. When I start it up it runs fine, when I am driving it runs fine, but once it gets warm it acts up. Here is a list of things I have changed....

MAP Sensor
Throttle position Sensor (TPS)
EGR Valve
IAC Valve

And none of it worked!

I checked the PCV Valve, took it out and shook it, it rattles. Maybe there is a vacuum leak somewhere in the PCV?? I am running out of ideas of what might be wrong and what else I can buy new parts for. Could it maybe be the ignition coils, even though it starts just fine and drives just fine? I'm going nuts!!

Plugged Cat, Plugged fuel filter, major head gasket leak, clogged injectors, stuck cold-start injector, plugged air filter...
Those would be my guesses... Are you spitting any codes?

I suppose I should go have it read with a computer to see what codes it's reading.

Don't need a computer. Just jumper the two last pins on the ALDL connector under the cig-lighter place (2 torx screws) It's the only 2 with metal connectors in it (top row)
Then just watch the "Check Engine" light.

well, the check engine light comes on a lot when I'm driving. Especially when I let off the accelerator or down shift.

If I jumper those two pins like you said, what will it mean if the light comes on?
What do I do, just get some paper clips, stick one on each pin and then touch them together? Wouldn't that short something out?

Let me know how to do this and I'll do it as soon as I can. I need this problem fixed. I also need to buy another car with in the next month or so, so I can stick the Fiero in storage through the winter. Too much stuff to do!!

if you jumper the connection the check engine light will flash the fault codes. kind of like morse code. blink ,blink blink would be 12 blink blink, blink blink, 22 and so no these codes point to sensors etc.

Ok, that seems simple enough to understand. Now, how do I jumper the pins?

Shouldn't own...

Get a manual, and read it all the way through. Anyone responsible enough to own a car should at least know the basics(no matter how mechanically challenged they might be).

Well, I have a manual, and I have a repair book, and I got the codes, and I fixed the problem, and now it runs great.
