Well, I finished fixing the cracks in my dash a couple weeks ago, and it turned out great.
For those of you unfamiliar with what I'm talking about, here's the original post:
Broken Dash Repair
I found out a few little tricks to make it work better also. The first tip was to cut away any foam in the vacinity of the crack and create a cavity for the epoxy to fill. I created cavity that was larger inside the hole than the actual hole, so that the epoxy can't come out. My first shot I tried just sticking the epoxy on the foam, but it was very loose and easily torn off.
I also found that it was easiest to let the epoxy harden for a couple hours and cut the excess with an exacto knife rather than trying to sand the big stuff. I was being generous and used extra, then cut it off.
I also took a few steps to avoid having air bubbles in the epoxy. I followed the directions, but that didn't eliminate all bubbles. Rather than trying to fill the whole cavity (probably about 1.5 ounces of epoxy necessary) I made small batches and layered the epoxy. This worked out good, especially because the inside cavity was larger than the hole, so I could ensure it was getting in there well and try to eliminate any bubbles. Also, it was easier to handle a small amount of epoxy, since it's pretty runny and trying to do a lot at once would have epoxy dripping all over the place.
I also used masking tape and taped off all the dash area around the crack, to avoid using any extra epoxy or making extra mess.
So, that's that; I sanded it down and it worked out really well. I have a couple of tiny air bubbles, but I'll take care of that before I paint with something thinner that will sit in the bubble easily (this particular epoxy won't go in the small holes because it's too thick).
I got the epoxy from Taijiguy, so I thank him a lot for that. This same kit was at Autozone for about 10 bucks, if my memory serves me correctly.
If anybody wants the leftovers from the tube (enough to use as much as I did to fix my dash a couple more times) it's free for the taking. I will ship it for free to whoever wants it, like Taijiguy did for me, but with one condition. Whoever wants this kit has to let us know what kind of tricks they figured out, what they used it for, etc. I will have pics of mine in about a month (moving and I'll process the film later) in case anybody's interested. I'll post the pics when I get them if nobody else has by then.
The only way you could tell this has ever been done after the dash is painted is that part of this area is smooth, and part is textured. I am going to sand the textured area down a little bit on the lip under the vent so it's not so noticeable up close, but from a couple feet, you wouldn't be able to tell. I highly recommend anybody with cracked dash areas tries this out.
If you want the epoxy, post here and let me know before the end of the night. I'm moving Friday and need to ship it tomorrow with a couple other things. After that, I may have to find a crevise in my car to fill (Yes, I'm moving with the Fiero, and no, I'm not taking two trips....I have to fit my entire life into my fiero. Ah, the joys of being a student who works in Alabama and goes to school in Michigan moving every three months
). Worst case scenario, I'll just throw it away, but we wouldn't want to see this wonderful product go to waste would we???
