The Fiero 35th Anniversary presented by Black Top Racing!
Mark Your Calendars for August 8-12 2018!
https://blacktop.racing/pontiac-fiero

Planning is well underway! We have four days of activities both at the Hotel and around the area for you to enjoy your Fiero with fellow Fiero owners. Thursday night, we will go for a cruise and end at an old fashioned diner. Friday, we will cruise down Route 66 to Pontiac, IL where we will tour the Pontiac Oakland Automobile Museum. Make sure to also get a picture of your Fiero under the famous Route 66 mural. Saturday is show day, make sure your car is shined up for the judges. See show cars in the show lot and inside the Poncho Perfection Magazine Hall of Fieros, where you can also see factory prototype and experimantal project Fieros. Saturday night, we have a great line up of speakers to discuss the history of the Fiero, including distinguished members of the original Fiero design, engineering, and manufacturing teams. Bring those questions you have always wanted to ask of the people who were there back in the day. Sunday morning, we will have awards after your free breakfast buffet.

Besides the great cars, the best part of attending an Anniversary Show is catching up with old Fiero friends and making some new ones. Everyday the hotel hosts a Happy Hour reception in the lobby area. The Embassy Suites offers many areas, both inside and out, to hang out and talk Fieros. There are many ongoing activities throughout the weekend, including Fiero memorabilia displays in the indoor exhibition area.

The Fiero 35th Anniversary Show will be fun for kids of all ages. The hotel has large rooms to accommodate families and an indoor pool. During the show, we encourage all kids present to pick up a kids ballot and vote for their favorite Fieros. We will have a Fiero model contest, so a great way to get ready for the 35th would be to put together a Fiero model.

More to be announced! Pre-registration, merchandise, and hotel info will soon be available! Stay tuned!

Basic Registration will include:
Entry for the Show for one Fiero
One OEM quality Front Fascia Badge with show logo
One Laser Cut Commemorative Stainless Steel Key Chain Fob

Hi gldkarma!
The merchandise will be orderable, we dont have a release date yet, but an important note is the merchandise will be for pick-up at the show, not shipped.

Oh darn. I had hoped to get some, at least my shirt, ahead of time as I need to hem it to wear it at the show.
So another question--what if we register and order stuff and then can't make it? One of our cars (the Hudson, not the Fiero!) may need a new engine and that could affect our ability to make the trip to both International meets. If I would need to cancel, and I'm not sure when I'll know, would there be any way to add postage to my order and get it?

It wouldn't be available before the show, but we will be able to accept payment and ship the T shirts after the show, which would be for an added shipping cost.
Refunds are available, but end at 30 days before the event. I hope that answers the question.

Everyone loves SWAG (Stuff We All Get). If you were wondering what you can get out of the Black Top Racing Presents the Fiero 35th Anniversary Celebration it starts with registration, just for registering you’re going to get the 35th anniversary OEM style nose badge and laser cut stainless steel key fob. That alone makes the registration worth the price!

But wait! There’s more! When you stop by show registration you’ll get your goody bag. Anyone who registers at the host hotel will get a FREE breakfast buffet! This isn’t the typical hotel day old donuts. This is a HUGE buffet with eggs, meat, potatoes, fruit, omelets made to order and more! The only thing that could possibly be better than a free breakfast would be the FREE evening reception with free drinks and appetizers. (Sorry alcohol served only to those of legal age)

Those who participate In Friday’s Fieros on Route 66 Cruise will get a free static cling window sticker that declares “I drove my Fiero on Route 66”. Once we arrive in Pontiac Illinois the city of Pontiac will have another goody bag for you. Among other things it will include a badge that entitles you to discounts in many of the local shops and eateries. Once in Pontiac you’ll no doubt want to visit the many FREE museums!

There will no doubt be many more goodies that we can talk about as we get closer to show time!

(Like the amazing stories and historical info you will hear from distinguished speakers who worked on and with the Fiero in the early days...) at our presentation Saturday evening after the show!

The Poncho Perfection Hall of Fieros!

One of the big reasons that the Fiero 35th Anniversary Celebration is being held in East Peoria is for the huge indoor space available. The Poncho Perfection Hall of Fieros will be even bigger than it was at the 30th anniversary show.

There are also fewer regulations. You don’t have to worry about how much gas is in the tank nor, will it have to be pushed in. The only exception is for cars running racing gas as their exhaust may set off the fire alarms. All cars will need a plastic sheet to catch any wayward drips and that will be supplied as part of your registration fee. As with all show cars AACA rules mandate a fire extinguisher.

You should get your registration in early as even though we have a lot of space it is filling up fast! Don’t wait! Don’t be disappointed!

Thank you to all of those who volunteered to aid us with the outdoor parking at the 35th Anniversary of the Pontiac Fiero event. We're now looking to borrow you (and/or possibly your spouse/significant other) to aid us with a job in the luxurious air-conditioned indoor facility - show registration!

While many of our participants will be pre-registered before they arrive in East Peoria, our registration team of Mary Bartemeyer, John Holmes and Paul Vargyas need a team of good volunteers to register additional participants and distribute materials to those who signed up in advance. Working in 2 hour shifts, we hope to utilize the talents of Fiero owners and their friends to help us facilitate this important portion of the show experience.

If this sounds like something you'd be interested in doing, we'd love to hear from you! If it doesn't turn your gears, there will be other opportunities to volunteer. Stay tuned!

ANNOUNCING—MODEL CAR CONCOURS

Got a Fiero model kit you built? A rare collectible Fiero toy, or a diorama with a Fiero garage? Have we got a deal for you! We will be having a Model Car Concours contest at the 35th Anniversary of the Introduction of the Pontiac Fiero event taking place August 8-12, 2018. Classes will include Stock for kits built mostly stock, Modified for kits built with substantial modifications from stock, Diorama for any display containing a Fiero or Fiero parts, Promotional/Collectible for preassembled Fiero toys (judged on condition, presentation and completeness) and Scratchbuilt for Fiero models built without kit parts or drastically modified kits or toys.       Celebrate Fiero History!

In addition to rare Fiero memorabilia and showroom stock Fieros, there will also be a number of Fiero prototypes and factory experimental projects on display in the Poncho Perfection Hall of Fieros at the 35th Anniversary Celebration.

Introducing one of these: The 1988 Fiero Pilot Car with 1990 dash mock-up and power steering.

This car is #25 of the 31 Pilot Build MY1988 built in the second week of March 1987. It has factory EHPS. The 16,128 miles were accumulated at Milford Proving Grounds. The car was also a test car for the proposed dash and instrument cluster for the MY1990. It is claimed that the car remained at Milford for further development of the instrument cluster for use in the production 1993 Firebird. In 1991, the engineer responsible for the car drove the car home regularly and suddenly passed away. His parents sold the car after storage all these years. The deceased engineer's brother confirmed the story about the cars time at Milford as he still works there and is part of the team that is building some of GM's current high performance line. There are engineering stickers all over this car including the all important "non-compliance" DOT emissions and safety waiver stuck on the back of the decklid.

Midwest Fiero Clubs (midwestfieroclubs@gmail.com) MSG #42, 05-01-2018 09:38 AM
Celebrate Fiero Racing History at the 35th Anniversary!

Racing has been a part of Fiero history since almost the conception of the Fiero. A huge part of the first model year 1984 was the Indy Pace Car replica edition. Of course, having a replica means that there was a specially prepared Fiero Indy Pace Car that could stand up to the task of leading the Indy 500. The man tasked to put together a Fiero that would meet the specifications for pacing the prestigious race was Lead Engineering Manager of Pontiac Motorsports, John Callies. Callies developed a 2.7L Super Duty 4 cylinder capable of putting out 232 horsepower propelling the car to a record-breaking 144mph four-lap average. 3 cars were prepared for pace car duties in the event that anything one of the cars developed an issue. Callies himself drove the pace car for the 1984 Indianapolis 500 won by Penske Team Driver Rick Mears. After the race Fiero Pace Car #2 was inducted into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, Fiero Pace Car #1 was returned back to GM and is now part of the Heritage Center Collection, and Fiero Pace Car #3 was contracted to join the PPG Indy Car World Series Pace Car Fleet. It is reported that winning driver Rick Mears wanted to take home one of the actual Fiero Pace Cars, but unfortunately all were spoken for and he was awarded one of the replicas.

The Fiero Indy Pace Car #3 started pace car duties with PPG in June 1984 in essentially the same form as it participated in the Indy 500 with various graphics changes and a few extra safety upgrades. At the end of the 1985 Indycar race season, Fiero Pace Car #3 had a major makeover with the addition of a DGP Aero Widebody, custom experimental paint, and engine upgrades that brought the engine horsepower up to 280 HP. Fiero Pace Car #3 remained active with the PPG Pace Car Fleet until mid-season 1987, pacing several Indycar races in the United States and Canada when the car was retired. The car remained in the PPG storage warehouse until 1989 when PPG and GM donated the car to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago to become a permanent display with in the Race Car Room at the museum. The car was put on display in a climate controlled glass enclosure that contained a lighted sign with some misleading information that described the history of the car inaccurately. In 2007, access was granted into the glass enclosure to document the car. It was this research trip that verified that the car was in fact the lost Indy Pace Car #3. In 2009, the museum decided to sell off a fairly large lot of their inventory at auction due to budget shortfalls caused by the reduction of state funding. The Fiero Pace Car was sent to Brookline, MA to be auctioned off in a non-running and very dirty state of condition. Midwest Fiero Clubs President Fred Bartemeyer Jr obtained a bidder number with the aid of two other Fiero Enthusiasts to be able to purchase the car and continues to preserve the large amount of history that accompanies the car. Fred will be displaying this special Fiero in the Poncho Perfection Hall of Fieros at the 35th!

Midwest Fiero Clubs (midwestfieroclubs@gmail.com) MSG #43, 05-03-2018 08:48 AM
The re-purposed Indy Pace Car #3 was not the only Fiero involved in the CART Indy Car World Series, though.

PPG Industries and Autostyle Industries also sponsored a Precision Driving Team made up of 6 specially prepared Fieros. These were truly the first Fiero fastbacks shown to the public featuring a European influenced body design giving the six cars a very unique look. They were all painted six different colors in experimental pearlescent effects to showcase PPG’s new future product lines. A team of women drivers would “warm up the crowd” showcasing their driving skills in the 6 Fieros before each Indycar race as part of the pre-race festivities. At the end of the Precision Driving Team tenure, the six cars were donated to various vocational schools through out the upper Midwest area in 1989. The donation distribution of the six cars were administered through the GM Vocational Donation Program by PPG and Pontiac Motorsports.

Over the years, many Fiero enthusiasts attempted to track the locations of where the cars were donated. In 1998, the Michigan Fiero Club was able to find and visit the Pearl Yellow GTP car at the Vo-Tech vocational school in Adrian Michigan. Harold Hooten of the American Fiero Chapter of POCI alerted that the car could possibly be available in spring of 2001. Fred Bartemeyer stayed persistent in obtaining the car and eventually was able to purchase the car in April of 2005. The Pearl Blue GTP car was retained by Pontiac in their special vehicle collection and was auctioned off in the 2009 GM Heritage Center Barrett-Jackson offering and purchased by long time Fiero owner Ed York. In 2004, through the contacts of the Cleveland Fiero Club, Fred Bartemeyer was able to view and document the Red Turbo GTP car at the Cuyahoga Vocational Center in Brecksville Ohio. The school contacted Fred to come and retrieve the car in 2010 in exchange for a monetary donation to the educational facility. Much effort went into tracking down the remaining PPG Fieros. Although the Red Turbo GTP car is in need of a complete restoration, is currently white and in very poor condition, it is important that the car is saved from the original intention of being destroyed when the school determined that the car no longer was of useful educational purposes. Through out the duration of several years of research, it is unfortunate to know the fate of the other three cars in which the cars were subject to the intended donation agreement and destroyed per the signed contract. We are excited that the three remaining PPG GTP Pace Cars will be in attendance at the 35th Anniversary. Come and see a unique part of Fiero history!

You should attend the 35th Anniversary show! The ultimate in Fiero experiences!
By -Tom Schmidt

Here is a perfect opportunity for you to come and participate in the biggest Fiero event to come along in years. You ask yourself: What is in it for me? Remember, you only get out of something what you put into it! So I am putting out a notice that you will regret not taking advantage of seeing the most unique display of stock, custom, modified, prototype and racing Fieros to be gathered in one place, along with other categories of Fieros you might not know existed .

Here’s why people do car shows and the key to being a part of the Fiero community : Having fun and being with Fiero people, do something new with your Fiero like showing it off for other like-minded owners to enjoy. With all the extra activities planned for this event, there is something for everyone to do. Renewing old acquaintances and meeting new owners from around the country, learning about the history of Fiero, looking at other Fieros to see all the changes that they made, maybe find a car for sale you might like to buy, or volunteering for the various functions such as registration, classification, judging or parking. People like to gather and have a good time talking about their Fieros and coming to this show will be the best place to do this. The costs will more than pay for themselves in the satisfaction you will get in attending this show.

Lots of merchandise will be available as souvenirs to take back home or wear at the show. Some are included with registration! This is your golden opportunity to experience the ultimate in Fiero experiences this August 8th thru 12th at the Embassy Suites Conference Center in East Peoria Illinois. Hope to see you there! Register your Fiero today at www.Fiero35th.com, you can also email us to let us know you would like to help by volunteering at the event! 35thVolunteers@midwestfieroclubs.com

Celebrate Fiero History! This car is #25 of the 31 Pilot Build MY1988 built in the second week of March 1987. It has factory EHPS (power steering). Special Fieros!
At the 35th Anniversary of the Introduction of the Pontiac Fiero presented by Black Top Racing (www.blacktop.racing) the days (and nights) of August 8-12, 2018 are filled with a variety of events including: unique and rare Fieros!

Keep your eye on www.fiero35th.com for the latest updates on all of the scheduled events!
http://fiero35th.com/schedule.html#schedule1

Throughout the weekend, you can check out all of the amazing Fieros parked in the 10,000 square foot indoor Fiero parking area, Poncho Perfection Magazine’s Hall of Fieros. Some of the extra special Fieros that are anticipated to be in attendance include:

2+2 Concept Fiero GT
The general public has only known the Fiero as a 2-seater automobile, but those who have been around the Fiero community for the long term know that there was one exception to this perception - the 2 + 2 Concept Car. The Pontiac Design Studio modified the ninth ‘84 pilot build car to study the impact of stretching the space frame. The 2 + 2 evokes the feeling of a Fastback with a little extra room. This silver car contains interior styling proposed for future product offerings for the Fiero with the addition of a backseat. The revised fastback 2+2 was utilized as a market proposal to demonstrate the versatility of the construction flexibility of the space frame platform during a period when the Fiero was running the risk of being cancelled. The downside? It is likely one of the smallest back seat spaces ever placed in a GM vehicle making it suitable only for small children and pets.

‘88 Fiero GT Production Pilot Build Car
This car is one of the 54 pilot build cars for the 1988 model year, which was built in the second week of March 1987. The car is number 25 of 25 GT Fieros built on March 09, 1987. The car has the factory electro-hydraulic power steering and preproduction factory driving lights. The 16,128 miles were accumulated at the Milford Proving Grounds in Michigan. The car was also a test car for the proposed dash and instrument cluster for the 1990 model year. It is claimed that the car remained at Milford for further development of the instrument cluster for use in the production ‘93 Firebird. In 1991, the engineer who had been responsible for the car and who had driven the car home regularly, suddenly passed away. His parents sold the car in 2014 after it had been in storage since 1991. The deceased engineer’s brother confirmed the story about the car’s time at Milford, as he still works there and is part of the team that is building some of GM's special high performance vehicles. There are engineering stickers on the car including the all important "non-compliance" DOT emissions and safety waiver notice on the bottom of the decklid.

‘84 Indy PPG Pace Car
This is car number three of three engineered by John Callies and team responsible for performing Pace Car duties for the 1984 Indianapolis 500. These three Fiero Pace Cars were heavily modified versions of the Indy replica versions available at Pontiac dealers that were equipped with the 91hp Iron Duke 4-cylinder engine. The car was contracted by Pontiac Motorsports to join the PPG Pace Car fleet in June 1984 where it was modified numerous times by PPG until its retirement in 1987. The car features a 2.7L Super Duty 4-cylinder with an experimental aluminum high port cylinder head and a Super Duty Muncie 4-speed with a Webster gear set. This 2.7L engine developed 280hp and 310 ft lbs of torque at 7,500 rpm with 12.5:1 compression ratio. The car also features the original ‘84 Pace Car equipment including the first development electro-hydraulic power steering and brakes, Beltech drop spindles, modified F-Body brakes, roller bearing control arm bushings, scatter proof CV joints and front mounted fuel cell. The final form of modification includes a factory contracted DGP widebody and experimental PPG Pearl White over three shades of Electric Violet paint.

PPG Pace Cars
Autostyle Plastics in conjunction with Pontiac Motorsports was contracted to modify six Fieros to serve as vehicles for the PPG CART Precision Driving Team. Renamed Fiero GTPs, these six cars were painted in PPG pearl metallic colors to be driven in pre-race demonstrations during the 1986 and 1987 Indy Car racing seasons, with one appearance in Europe. Female drivers performed a variety of different stunts and maneuvers to highlight the products and relationships of GM, PPG and Autostyle Plastics. In addition to cosmetic upgrades performed on the interior and exterior of the vehicles, a variety of mechanical upgrades also occurred including the installation of a 3.0L V6 block, bigger lift cam with modified duration that compliments a custom intake. The engine also contains flat-top pistons and reinforced connecting rods that pair with a stock crankshaft and larger oil return galleys. One car was fitted with an experimental turbocharged 3.0L V6.
Five of the six cars were donated to vocational schools in the Midwest while the Pearl Blue colored car was retained by General Motors for their Heritage Center Collection, where it remained until its sale in 2009. Three of the five donated PPG GTP Pace Cars have been traced as being crushed. All three of the surviving cars will be on display with a large collection of historical material pertaining to these cars at the 35th Anniversary event.

‘84 Factory Experimental IMSA Widebody
This unique special project by GM contained a 220hp 2.7L Super Duty 4-cylinder engine. The SD4 is an early cast block that was later upgraded from a cast iron head to an aluminum head. It has a custom fabricated header with no catalytic converter, stock exhaust, and Super Duty Getrag 5-speed manual transmission. The car also has electro-hydraulic brakes and electo-hydraulic power steering. Its body is the first handmade DGP Stage III and revised Stage IV IMSA-style wide body panels and the whaletail spoiler. Despite its racing look, the car was fitted with features such as air conditioning, cruise control, power windows and a stock stereo. The car was used as an engine development vehicle at the Mesa, AZ proving grounds under direction of John Callies. Primary funding came from the development of the fluid harmonic balancer later used on several GM engines. The car was presented for corporate consideration to offer the SD4 as a factory RPO option in 1984. In 1986, the car was prepared as a feature car in the 1986 Pontiac Motorsports SEMA display. It displays 6,902 miles on the odometer.

IMSA GTU Race Car
This GM Goodwrench sponsored Fiero was designed by Pontiac Racing/Engineering and built by Huffaker Racing. The car raced from 1984-1991 in the GTU, T/A, and GTO classes. It was driven by Bob Earl, Terry Visger, and Dominic Dobson. We are very excited to have one of the Huffaker IMSA Fieros on display in Poncho Perfection Magazine’s Hall of Fieros. In 1984 Huffaker Engineering put together a tube frame chassis with anti-squat and anti-dive adjustments. Huffaker utilized a modified Spice Racing running gear and of course the potent Super Duty 4-cylinder engine powered these race cars. Huffaker went on to build a number of Fiero race cars, but it is believed that only four were made in this configuration. This Fiero campaigned in GTU class as the number 55 Goodwrench/Huffaker Fiero from 1985 to 1987. Bob Earl started 27 races and came away with 10 victories and 16 poles. Terry Visger ran 10 races and came away with seven wins.
In 1989 the car was set up for Trans Am racing for a corporate sponsor. The Super Duty 4-cylinder engine was replaced with a 4.5L Buick V6. The sponsor’s CEO drove it in three Trans Am races and then the program was halted. The car was then raced in two IMSA GTO races by Dominic Dobson. The Huffaker Fiero then sat until 1999 when an SCCA enthusiast purchased the car to compete in races in the San Francisco region. The car claimed an additional 25 victories in the SCCA Super Production Class along with qualifying records at Laguna Seca and Sears Point. In 2012 this Fiero underwent a complete frame off restoration and the Buick V6 was replaced with a NASCAR Chevy 354 V8. In 2013 the Huffaker Fiero was sold to Mark Schwartz who continues to race the Fiero when time permits. Mark still has the NASCAR Chevy motor in the Fiero, but hopes to replace it with a proper Super Duty 4-cylinder someday. We look forward to seeing Mark and his IMSA Fiero.

Home-Built IMSA Race Car
Also scheduled for display is Paul Hosler’s home-built Fiero IMSA race car. The car emulates what would have been available to the general public if a person desired to build their own race car from the information available in the Pontiac Motorsports issued Pontiac Performance Plus Magazine. A 412 ci small block Chevy with prototype Pontiac 867 heads developing 645hp powers the 2300 lb race car. The suspension has been fabricated by the original IMSA Fiero engineer to period correct specifications. With a host of features ready for the track, this 210 mph track rocket is a work of art. All of the modifications on this car were performed exclusively by the owner. You can find more details about this car at http://www.cardomain.com/ri.../2003-pontiac-fiero/

Answering One Final Important Question - What’s the Best Way to Get to the 35th?
In your Fiero, of course! Aside from this preferred method of transportation, our resident East Peorian, Garry Kay, has been checking the IDOT webpage and based on what he is currently hearing about the area, it looks like there will be clear roads in the Peoria area from Interstate 74, exit 95 to Main Street, to Camp Street to the host hotel. All major interstates in the surrounding area have some construction, but nothing with any long detours or delays are anticipated. Garry recommends that if you can, avoid traveling around the Chicago area.

Remember if your Fiero is part of The Fiero 35th Anniversary a fire extinguisher is required.
A minimum Class BC UL rating of 5B:C, 1.5lb extinguisher. Most retail outlets carry this type for $15.
A 2.5lb ABC extinguisher with a UL rating of 1A:10B:C is recommended.
During the show your extinguisher is to be displayed on the ground in front of the driver’s side tire.
A very limited number of fire extinguishers will be available for purchase at the show.

What accommodation is being made for Fiero Owners who will not be bringing a Fiero to register... but would l like to spectate and attend some of the activities?

Spectators are welcome at any of the activities.
We would recommend if you do not drive a Fiero (or ride in one) that if you want to go where the Fiero cruises go, you don't get between the Fieros in the cruise. (Ruins pictures)

Maybe you aren't on facebook? You can share pics here on Pennocks Fiero Forum, and you can also share them here in this Google Album for us to see!

Had a great time at the Fiero 35th! Met lots of great people. Loved the COLORFUL 35th Anniversary shirts! Saw some friends again who we met at the 30th. Learned a lot of new info from others. Met a lot of parts and equipment vendors. Well worth it. I've already got some ideas on what to improve on our Fiero (that we've had for 33 years). We only met a couple of people who have owned their Fiero longer. I hope the 40th is somewhere in the midwest again. Maybe Kansas City?

Old Lar drove up from Florida with Mark Fisher.. Some 22 hours of seat time for the trip up. One ICM replacement (thanks to Tom Harding) as I had a replacement in my parts box. One dead radiator fan once I got to Pontiac. (Thanks to Bernie's Auto in Pontiac for a quick repair). The another 22+ hours back home. A bit over 2500 miles and the car averaged 28+ mpg. I had the only stock 87 GT, but I was in a non judged class. (only mods were Borla exhaust tips, Mr Mike's new cloth interior and LED headlights) That much driving it was too much to do any great detailing clean up.

I am saddened I missed this. I have been out of the picture for a few years. I am going to get back into Fiero mode!
