They look nice. Have you put them in the freezer to see how pliable the material is in cold weather? That's the complaint that I have with my '85GTs stock auto shifter boot. It gets stiff and tries to pull loose from the console panel in cold weather.

Fiero Thomas (tom@fieronews.net) MSG #3, 11-11-2007 05:30 PM
I have not put them in the freezer but this is very plyable material. I givre it a shot though. Never hearg of doing it. I have had a couple in testing and they aare working gtreat I have been told.

Fiero Thomas (tom@fieronews.net) MSG #4, 11-11-2007 06:44 PM
Well all looks frozen and working well. They still Stretch easy.

Fiero Thomas (tom@fieronews.net) MSG #8, 11-12-2007 08:04 AM
There would be no cost increase as this is not an odd color to get. I can still get them out same day.

What are the difference in types?

Fiero Thomas (tom@fieronews.net) MSG #31, 11-18-2007 09:46 PM
The bottoms are not the same where they hook to your shifter plate. I will post photos of them to show.

Fiero Thomas (tom@fieronews.net) MSG #32, 11-24-2007 07:54 PM
The auto boots are a go now. there are two kinds I have one knocked out and trying to figure out what to do on the other. OK heres the deal this is to find out what type of boot you have. If there is stiching around the base then it is an elastic kind. If you grab the base and can feel a ridge then there is a plastic trim ring in it. We can do the plastic trim ring one.. Here is the photo. You will need to use the old plastic ring on the new boot. IT is very easy and will come with instructions.

25.00 Shipped

Its a forest green with black stiching. They came out cool and classy

I have been trying new things to make them look right. I am still working on them though. I have bought a new machine to see if that will help out as well. I dont want to ship them till I am 100% with them on there looks and function. I just need to get the elastic part right on them.

Fiero Thomas (tom@fieronews.net) MSG #46, 12-19-2007 12:12 PM
I am so close on this I hope to have a solution today. I got some much needed photos of a few things to make this work out the way that I need to. I never thought that these would be so hard to make but there is an issue with them that make them very hard to complete on the bottom. I will post some examples of the completed ones today I hope. I will make a bunch to take bare of everybody. they will be available in many colors like the others and in carbon fiber style as well.

Thank you for the waiting on this

Rich

Fiero Thomas (tom@fieronews.net) MSG #67, 01-05-2008 01:46 PM
At this time I can not. I am working on it though. The People that make the software for font on these machines I use are very expensive. It will cost me ???.?? to add this one font to there line up. Its hard to explain but each font cost funds to use even if you have it already. The software will not let you run it. There are only two company's that make this kind of software and they are booth he same. In the future I do see being abole to do this. I at this time have a few fonts that I can use. The one in the photo abv I was just fooling with but I have other nice ones that I have been using for customers at this time. I hope in the future that I can use this font as it will only make sense. I am trying to find away around it at this time as doing it as a photo but we will see.

Installed the boot today. WOW! It looks and works great. Honestly, Tom I don't think I would change this one. It fits perfect b/c it is a bit larger than the stock one so it doesn't bunch all up around the shifter surround. It fits nearly the same as the stock boot, but I think the stock boot fits a little tighter. The leather boot goes on and pops off easier but it doesn't move around like its loose. I love it. I highly reccomend your products! Thanks Tom. Tyler

Just got this through a non pff member. Though I would post to help people choose my boots. Made me feel great to get this responce to my boots

Tom,

Got them last night- LOVE the material- it looks so much better than the cheap stuff the factory installed it's not even comparable! I'd rather have your unit than the factory piece hands down- nice quality overall and much better material.

Thanks for providing this sort of item for the Fiero.

Actually Tom, I AM a PFF member!

And no kidding everyone- the material he is using (specifically the synthetic leather) is simply head and shoulders above the look of the OEM boots. It looks much like real leather and the stitching is very nice too. The boots Tom is selling put the original shiny vinyl OEM boots to shame in my opinion, and seriously upgrade the look of the interior in a nice Fiero- no more crappy looking shiny black boot!

In fact, the material Tom has found looks virtually identical the the boot in my 2004 Mazda 6 Wagon (yes, manual trans with V6 for anyone wondering). Very nice indeed.

Thanks Tom!

-Gary

The boot will slid over the shaft like the old one and the trim theat goes over the ebreake will hold it in place. when he puts the end back on the ebreake where the button it then that will hold the top of the boot in place. Hope that helps out.

Is the e-brake boot is exactly the same size of the OEM one? It appears slightly larger (it might just be the pictures). If I were to order on I would send you the components from the old one so it could be the same style and size as OEM.

And here is the shifter boot at it's new home:

I will get to the E-brake boot this weekend.

The shifter boot is a perfect fit. I rolled the edges in due to the short shifter and all is fine. It doesn't hang up or get stressed when shifting thru the gears.

I would say on a 1 to 10 scale these are 12's!!!!

Big THANKS to Tom.

Any chance you could do a shift boot with the same stitching style as the p.brake boots, so you could see the stitching, and so they'd match better?
I know it's not as OEM, but I think it'd be a nice touch...

Fiero Thomas (tom@fieronews.net) MSG #129, 05-04-2008 09:07 PM
Thats a good question. On the shifter boots I dont top stitch them as I have not figured out a way to do it at all. I have tried for sure. Here is the issue. The first three seams are easy to do but to do the fourth seam correctly you need to have a machine with the size of the opening of the boot to slide through. WIth the boots its about less than an inch that would be just about imposable for me to do. However there is a way to do it but I dont like doing it that way as it is not the right way and not a true top stitch. what I can do is stitch the color into the boot then sew it closed but there will be a flex in the boot. Not the best way to do it but about the only way. I just rather do them the best that I can and found that to be without the stitching on them. BUt I am always willing to help where I can.

Tom

I have been looking to do this. The issue that I am running into at this time is cost. To get a spool of quality leather thread to stitch with is close to 100.00 and the leather tools run up to another 50.00. I would think in a few months that I will be able to do this kind of work. I want to practice a bunch on a few things I have here like the wheels and shifter in the indy to see what happenes. I will keep you posted. But yes soon I will.

I am sure that I can get black suede but I dont think that it would hold up as boots very well. To thin.

I am sure that I can do this on the lower part of the door. Not sure about the top part. Might look pretty cool

      Hi Thomas,

How do you do the parallel stitching? Do you have a special sewing machine for that?

Also, have you tried microsuede yet? If yes, could you post pictures?

Could you make a set for Rodney Dickmans "Competition short throw shifter"?

I do each line one at a time. the bend at the end of out boots make it imposable to you a double needle. would be nice though.

I have some suede here I need to try it but I dont think that it will hold up. I do make short shifter boots as well.

Tom

How do you get the spacing to stay even? (I'm asking for other projects, not necessarily shifter boots)

I didn't mean "real" suede. I was hoping for things such as Microsuede, or Ultrasuede.

A good definition for the material is:

quote
see: http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-microsuede.htm
Microsuede, or microfiber, is a man made fiber. It is a knit blend that is made from very fine fibers that can sometimes be a hundred times finer than human hair. These delicate fibers are tightly woven together to create a dense fabric that has many of the came qualities as suede leather. However, it is generally much easier to clean than real suede and is usually much softer, as well. It is often used on furniture because it is very resistant to dirt and can be very durable.

quote
see: www.wikipedia.com
Ultrasuede is a synthetic fabric invented in 1970 by Dr. Miyoshi Okamoto, a scientist working for Toray Industries. It was the world's first ultra-microfiber. Fabric content is 100% polyester. Ultrasuede feels like natural suede, but it is resistant to stains and discolouration; it can be washed in a washing machine. It is a woven fabric, but resists pulling or fraying because it is combined with a polyurethane foam in a non-woven structure. The fabric is multifunctional: it is used in fashion, interior decorating, automotive and other vehicle upholstery, and industrial applications, such as protective fabric for electronic equipment. It is also a very popular fabric in the manufacture of footbags (also known as hacky sacks).

Oh, I like this part of the care instructions :

quote
... You can use most polyester cleaners on microsuede. Rubbing alcohol or clear alcohols, such as vodka, can be used. ..

"Noo, ossifer, I wasn't drinkin'. I was just cleaning my upholstery... "

Back to seriousness now.

Thomas, I know some companies, such as www.denverfabrics.com offer free sample materials. Maybe try it out on that and see how well it holds up. What do you think?
