So, today I am finally getting underway with my chop now that all the snow has gone (crosses fingers) Yesterday I prefitted the Archie rockers I am going to do everything at once I decided so I can just hammer out all the bodywork at once.

This is what I am thinking for a color combo

Hulki U. My-BFF (adweigle@hughes.net) MSG #2, 04-24-2011 10:32 AM
Awesome, can't wait to see you chop that bad boy. Are you doing a total homebrew chop, or are you taking it somewhere? Also, I'm digging the color combo, I would like to see a photoshop of that.

It's about time you start this chop! LOL

Steve

jetsnvettes2000 MSG #4, 04-24-2011 07:45 PM
Yup I am doing a total home brew chop using the Archie kit Today made huge progress all I have left is to remove the front and rear windows and to weld in support braces then its Chopin time!!! I had a bit of a pain in the ass with two of the roof hold down bolts one on the fast back part and one on the roof panel both of them spun outta the fiberglass so I will have to fix those later but otherwise just being slow and careful I didn't break nothing! did all this myself today in just a few hours.

Sail panel fail oooops!

Pain in rear to remove!!

took entire interior out

Found my short! grrrr mice!

Holy crap you were busy today!

You do know it was Easter Sunday.....

Steve

Hulki U. My-BFF (adweigle@hughes.net) MSG #6, 04-24-2011 09:32 PM
Yeah you were definitely busy, and kudos for getting your roof panel off in one piece. That damn black tacky sealant crap from the factory is some real tough stuff. Also, you caught that rust at a good time, very easy to repair and prevent right now by putting some kind of chassis coating on like POR-15 or such. Can't wait to see some more! Good luck!

jetsnvettes2000 MSG #7, 04-24-2011 10:22 PM
So I like the look of the sail panels shown on the outlaws thread, but my question is were can I find a set of smoked sail panels to cut up so I can do it since mine disintegrated when I tried to remove them, granted mine were really cheap knockoffs and didn't even have a curve to them they just were bent over on the front. I need a set of not so nice ones if anyone has some they can be totally junk I think i am going to use them as a mold and just make a set of fiberglass delete ones with a scoop in it. kinda like the ones on a lotus esprite.

I'm on the verge of running out. you can use the last of it if you want though Lol

the tank gauge reads basically 0, but the regulator shows theres still some in the tank

thats some crazy fast progress you made. I cant believe how fast for your first chop infact (or is that your first?)

I know your good with body work stuff so I'm sure that helps

YA cool if it would last ten minuts id have the main welds done enuf were I could let it sit till monday when I can get more, I ran out right when I was welding the left b pillar and the a pillar base so its a bit floppy but secure! I was otherwise going to go get some gasless wire to at least throw a few extra tacks on it so it cant move at all, the right side of the car is basically done with all welding!

So did alittle more welding tonite but the weather was not being kind again so I came in and started on my front bumper ideas, this is what I am kinda thinking:

jetsnvettes2000 MSG #27, 05-01-2011 08:49 PM
Did alittle more work today, since I am out of shielding gas for the welder I decided to fix all the rust damage to the rear clip, it took me all of 20 minuts to wire wheel all the rust off and it was good! I then got some good 3m rubberized undercoating and coverd the rear frame rails inside and out, that should take care of any future rust!

      Looking good Rob!

I dont know if the 84 door panels will work I hear somthing is diffrent about them thats why I abandoned grabbin the ones off the 84 at gibsons maby someone can chime in what the diffrence is? I supose if its a easy mod like drillin a couple of extra holes id be all in for them.

There is a small notch at the upper rear corner of the door panels not found on other years. I'm not sure if it was on all 84's, so some 84 panels may not have the notch

jetsnvettes2000 MSG #46, 05-05-2011 09:55 PM
Well I got very little done tonight and had a small set back. I work on an awful lot of corvettes and well all the corvette crap got stuck in my head tonight as I was modifying the fiero door seal channel. So, I held the channel up to mark my cut no biggie right well lol I cut the wrong side! the chop curve is perfect for the channel to sit in backwards, being I am always messing with vettes I didn't notice the window guide on the inside of the car vs outside were its supposed to be on the fiero! corvettes have it on the inside!! So after I made my cut and fastened the channel I noticed I did it backward! yup I hope that's my only duhhhhhh moment during this build!
Off to the bone yard sat I need a new part! I will post pics tomorrow of the window seal modified on the drivers side, I got that done tonight, just waiting for the glue to dry. I had to quit for the night rain delay yet again!

OK, so I got a little further today. I started with changing the right deck lid hinge since the spring was busted, I figure it was a good time to change it since there is no back window in the way. It was really easy to change with a naked car! After that I started to work on the fiberglass and well I am not following the directions at this point.
I want a more boxed look towards the rear of the sail panel, kinda like a hip but more subtle and not a wide body. Also am doing the fiber-glassing different, since I am changing the shape of the sail panel totally I don't need to use the straps u commonly see in everybody's chop pics for holding the glass together. To bond my sail panel areas back on I will be doing it with a combination of 8115 3m panel glue and then fiber glassing them into the shape I am going for.
I haven't cut the roof part yet, don't worry it will be cut to match the angle of the forward roof I just ran out of daylight so had to stop for the night. Here are some pics.

Must have done it right the window fits!

Got even more done today!! I started doing more of the fiberglass and planing out how I am doing the sail windows different.
I am in the staged of ruff fiberglassin so its not pretty yet that will come later. I haven't decided how I am doing the back of the sail window yet, since the way I am doing it makes the window a little longer than a stock one.
I also got a new windshield today from Av8fiero and the window seal channel from the bone yard that I mesed up!.

Had to re bond the stud, it got stuck in spaceframe

Here you can see how I cut the top away to redo the angle so it lays right

this tye was pulled out too of the roof panel so I bonded in a new one

new windshield thanks av8fiero!

ready to glass

first layers of glass and resin

A huge tip, I use these all the time at work to mix resin in, its a jello pudding cup. My grandmother eats like a pack of 6 a day of these so she keeps me well stocked up at work and home with the cups. Buy your kids jello the cups work perfect! the tounge depressors are from a medical supply company costed 3 bucks for 500

final layer of glass

Right side just about done, needs a light skim coat of resin to fill a few air bubbles but otherwise done and shaped perfect!

Tomorrow I will be grinding down the other side and then starting on the back half of the sail panel area I think ill be mocking up the new form out of balsa wood to get the shape I want then ill glass over it pics to follow!

Got alot more done today, I am beat I have been at it since 8 this morning! time to rest, here are some progress pics, I extended the sail panel window back about 1 3/4 inches. I did this because I wanted the window to match the profile of the car more and it deepens the factory hip a bit the way I bonded it and fiberglassed it. I prob need to do another layer of glass yet in spots but I have the general shape were I want it.

Looks like I have alittle fixin to do good thing I have the extra top panel.

Will give some good perspective to those considering it.

I have been keeping track of the time, so far I am just shy of 50 hours but that includes alot of mechanical fixing mixed in with the chop, I am dividing my time, as the resin drys I fix somthin else thats broke or wore out, ya cant rush the resin or u weaken it. I would say to get it to the point of being able to start throwin it back together ill prob be in it 60 total hours for the chop end of it, I am doing a few things diffrent than a typical chop so Its going to make it take a bit longer.
If ya notice the back of the sail panel area I extended the curved part back about 1.75 inches, I wanted to reduce the width of the c pillars"?" base to make it look alittle nicer. I m planning on filling the gap with a hybrid notchy/fastback sail panel using the front part of a notchy sail panel cut down and re shaped a bit.

here is a pic of gtkieth standing next to the chop he is 6'4"

We had to fix the seal channel it was rotted out , luckly I had a a spare set

here kieth is helpin install the new seal channel

Here is were I cut back the rear clip for the roof panel to sit on, but here is also were I ran into a snag, now that I cut it back the roof fits and sits flush but, the roof flattens out in the middle a bit now and the sunroof glass has a bit of a arch to it, should I just shim the roof section to match the glass I will have further pics

U can see in this pic how I alterd the roof line just slightly diffrent from the others my sail panel area is about 1 3/4 longer than the other chops I didnt like the stock look so I rounded off the back of the sail panel area and will be making it so the glass lays flat in the new shape so I can add a scoop later on with the glass.

Here u can see how the sunroof glass bows higher than the rest of it, I need to figure out shiming it but I have an idea how to deal with it, I also noticed I need to do some trimming of the fiberglass on the bottom side of the rear clip, it is hitting a bit in the corner of the roof making it not line up right. its a easy fix just annoying now I need to take it back off yet again!

Here u can see the glass arch higher than the rest of the roof line in the middle I need to shim it I guess.

Got alittle more done today, I went to the bone yard and picked up a nice set of sail panels from a notchy to cut up for my hybrid sail panel.

Here are some pics for ya, only two tonite I had stuff to do so didnt work long on it.

I laid alittle glass tonite too and started grinding it but it got too dark to take a pic so I will tomorrow of the aftermath of sanding

Here is my concept of the hybrid gt/notchy sail panel, I did this due to extending the sail panel area, the stock sail panel is too short so this is my way of making it longer, ill post better pics of how it all goes together tomorrow if I get time to work on it. The front part uses the stock mounting clip on the back to hold it down.

edit: if it really comes down to it, could a non-sunroof top fit in that spot? I know it would suck to undo that fiberglassing...

yup it would fit just as snug as the one I have on it but, I really want the sun roof. My air dosent work, well at least not yet , I think I have the answer to the bow in the sunroof glass tho, I will be making the parts tomorrow to adjust it a bit. That is the nice thing about fiberglass, if u dont like it grind and add another layer!

True that, I recharged my R-134 system at the beginning of last summer, had ice cold air throughout the season, and after pulling it out of storage this spring, it had all leaked out. I love my sunroof!

Welll got alittle more done tonite, I was able to come up with a way to fix the issue with the sunroof glass and now I just need to bond the panel. Working hours tonite 2

The force is strong with this one tonite!

Begining the forming of the front roof

All done forming and ready for a skim coat of filler then on to highbuild

Forming the new radius

her ya can see the roof line as we reshaped it

Thats it for pics tonite, Tomorrow I wont be gettin much done on it I have to work on the house a bit.

No work done tonite, the carpet finally went in and I spent the nite cleaning and finally moving the kids stuff back into their rooms! finally my house will be back to normal soon!

jetsnvettes2000 MSG #81, 05-19-2011 11:27 PM
Well howdy everyone!! I got some more done tonite, I glassed the back side of the roof panel to make it stronger, then I glued the floopy seam on the rear clip solving my issue of the sunroof glass! after all that I glued in the windshield and started workin on the inner sail panel trim parts a bit. I decided to not use the archie ones so if anyone needs a set I have some.
Here I ground of all the old glue junk so the glass had a nice surface to bond to

Here I added a bit of glass and resin to make it a bit stronger just in case.

Here I pumped 3m 8115 panel bonding glue into the seam to hold the shape I wanted, after it drys ill be bonding the roof panel to the lip I made for it to sit on, then I will be fiberglassing the seam.

glue in and waiting for the glass

On the back side of the glass if your going to install your own u really need to buy glass primer before u glue it or u take a chance of it not sticking right

This is the glass primer, u rub it on with a dobber were the glass urathane goes

this is the glue, its really expensive for a tube u will need two to do the windshield, also dont loose the little triangle shape rubber parts under the glass, they set the height of the glass.

Here the windshield is glued in and u can see the glue seam on the bottom of the window from the inside.

This pic is for me to remember to grind the weld so the roof panel sits in the groove better

Here I am test fitting the sunroof glass for the last time before I bond the panel, it finally fits right!

Gettin closer

Make me an offer on these archie trim panels for the sail panel I dont need them now

Here is what I am doing instead

Thanks I think tomorrow will be another milestone day for the chop! I am planning on finishing up the last bits of fiberglass by filling the roof seam, I already bonded it tonite with 8115 automix on the ledge I made under the roof panel. After its dry by morning ill be good and ready to dig a nice channel and fill it in with glass and resin. I noticed too I need to cut the front of the roof clip at the bottom of the winshield, it bows out away from the windshield now I suspect that was from raking the windshield back. To fix it I will just simply cut a chunk out of it and just bond it back together with alittle fiberglass. I am going to rejoin the cut part of the rear clip under the sail panel too just for alittle more strength since I will be using the old bolt point as a flange to hold the notchback sail panel stip now. Tomorrow ill post pics of how it all holds together its really simple.

So on facebook i was just asked how much cash I have into this chop so far and well I think ive prob pulled off the cheapest chop so far.
I am under two grand in total cost but!!!! I had alot of parts layin around and friends here on the forum gave me alot of parts as well or traded me for parts I needed. Even the paint so far didnt cost a dime! I had leftover from a car I had painted at work and just by chance the base was the same white as on my fiero! i call that luck! I also had alot of credits built up at autozone so any tape or supplys i needed I got those free w my stored up points! so yup so far robochop total cost with buying the car for 300 bucks and the 500 I put into making the interior is under 3 grand so far......... I will blow that outa the water soon tho many changes are yet to come!

So I finally got back to the chop project tonite and started to modify everything for the interior. The head liner was really easy to mod to fit, all I had to do is cut it back about a inch on the fiberside and pull the backing board away from the headliner cloth, then I just simply folded it over the new cut line and done had it in in ten minuts!

the dash went in really easy too altho i had to wiggle it past the steering wheel a bit now that the windshield lays so far back.

I am hoping to have it done within the next two weeks with phase one of the build, next summer ill start phase two with new bumpers a engine swap and tail lights.
phase three will be a diffrent hood and possibly a wide body kit, I am not shure yet tho I kinda like the look it has now without the widebody. In the future it will also be getting a color change, the white is just temp to keep it all sealed up.

I also plan on some sorta engine swap, I am torn between the 3800sc and a turbo 8, I like speed but I also like noise and well the 8 wins the noise but the 3800 well its fast!!! ugh so many choices maby ill just get another fiero and chop it too and have both!

Well after a awesome day I think I finally made noticable progress in the interior! I had to take most of it all back out when I decided I wanted to do a black border on the back window to hide some of the glue and back side of the interior bits. I then got brave and decided to tackle my nagging sunroof seal issue and made a fat spacer for the clamp wich in turn seems to have finally done the job.
here are a few pics nothin much tho was so busy workin forgot to take pics!

I decided to add even more padding to my arm pad I made and boy is it ever comfy!

Av8fiero here is a pic for ya I managed to get the sunroof glass to conform to the seal!! boy is it under alot of tension!

Thanks! I have been cuttin up and doing custom corvettes for 15 years now and I basically started this project out of sheer bordem of corvettes! I have a really nice set of vw 18's I will be putting on it if I can find a set of wheel adapters I am happy with or I just may get a diffrent aftermarket set and sell the vw rims and with that ill lower the car as well.

I plan on opening my own shop within the verry near future, I am waiting for the economy to pick up a bit and the banks to ease up their loan situation.

Got alittle farther tonite, I finished up making the sail panel trim panels but I am not verry happy with the fit. I ended up using the Archie parts after all but I need to do somthing about the back edge of the panels were they meet the rear clip, they are uneven and well I just am being picky. I am not bashin the Archie panel tho its not his fault they are uneven, the rear clip from the factory has some defects in it and it makes them apear to be off a bit ill fix that later when I give the car its final paint job.
I had a bit of damage fitting them too I knicked my temp paint up and chiped a bit of the corner above the rear window were the body curves around grrrrrrr guess ill fix that later on when I give the car its final paint job next summer. For now ill just fill in the problem with a bit of resin and touch it up I didnt think this paint would last forever and well I guess its thinner than I had first suspected, it chips pretty easy ugh! I am not a fan of chroma base its so brittle! prob coulda stood to give it a few more coats of clear, it prob would have held up to chips a bit better but free is free and I didnt have much to use.

I've always loved the look of the chopped top Fieros done by Archie.
It is a lot of work and a pretty large investment though. For my Fiero I can't see spending more for the top than the car is worth but the big buck Fiero guys don't blink and get them done. I guess that I am one of the low buck DIY Fiero people.

      Hey man,
How did you make those sail panels? Where do you get plastic material like that? I really like the way you did that. Was it pretty cheap to do in lieu of replacement ones? They actually look pretty damn nice. I wonder how hard it would be to try to mold the front edge with a heat gun to be at least CLOSE to factory look. I know I have bent a lot of plexiglass for stuff and it bends pretty easy. Mine look like crap and I still have a lot of body work to do to the car and it would be nice to be able to make at least that part look good until I get the car painted. Would you mind sharing your secrets/sources? Peace

Howdy!, the sail panels were way easier to make then even I expected, I got the material from Menards.
First I made a cardboard template that fit into the grove I made in the sail area.
Second I cut out the shape using my ban saw, a sawzawl will just destroy lexan id stay away from using one.
After a bit of sanding the edges I simply 3m taped them into place like the originals would have.
When I did all the fiberglass work I changed the angle of the lip the panel sits on so I could use a flatter piece of lexan without the need to have a extream bend in it, I then used a notchy sail panel front and cut off the back side with my ban saw.

The notchy sail panel has this little bracket built into it on the back, kinda a little tab thingy wich acts perfectly like a holder stop on the gt rear clip front edge were it used to be rivited to the body before the chop.
I simply slid the bracket on the sail panel front piece under the existing tab on the rear clip of the car and then held it all down w a bit of the 3m tape on the back edge of the notchy sail panel part ill post some close pics of it.

Back to the lexan, I then put the cut out part into its place in the car w the protective plastic on it and traced out the hole in the quarter u see thru making shure I was covering anything I didnt want to see. Then I removed the panel and pulled the protective tape on the other side and transferd the pattren thru the lexan w the tape and then taped out the center were I didnt want black out paint.

After all that I sprayed it w vynal and plastic paint so it would stick really good but, first I sanded it w 240 grit paper to give it good tooth. after it dryed I pulled my tapes and walla a perfect home made panel!
86soon3.4 gave me a aftermarket fiero store cheapo one and looking at it I relized all they do to make theirs is kinda how I did mine only they prob use a vynal sticker to get the dot matrix pattren before they spray it w the paint.

Far as making the front edge round over like the original it can be easily done w a heater bar, I have one at work, we use it to make machine guards with and I suspect the aftermarket makers use one to to form their panels. With my car, my sail panel area is about 1 inch longer than a stock one into the curve I did at the back so I needed to make a custom one and thats how I came to the hybrid notchy gt sail panel I created. Ill go out now and grab a few more close ups. they will be at the end of this set of pics I took today.

SO my first drive in a choptop, I first noticed its a b!itch to back up lol I need a camera but After I got it out of the driveway I started to notice things right away like on the hi-way cabin wind noise is crazy less than a stock fiero. I then started to play around a bit since my arm hangs out so far of the window and yes guys the heat off the back of the car is incredible at the back edge of the top! i can reach my hand back that far now and when I aproach the end of the roof I can feel the heat!
I then noticed I was gettin tons of looks and a thumbs up from a guy in a 911 lol.

custom sail by me!

I almost forgot to say the cost to make the sail panel. the lexan was 32 dollars the paint was 5 and the notchy sail panels I cut up costed 5 bucks at the bone yard and came out of a 88 the 84 ones will not work.

Did alittle more work to the chop yesterday, after driving it for a few days now on the highway I had a really bad shake in the rear end, I discoverd the right rear tie rod was bad. I had a spare here I got from the bone yard and threw it in and walla the big shake is gone! now I still have alittle shake left yet but I think I have a tire outa balance.

On the photoshop thread my car got the workover and well I love it and I have decided this is going to be the color I paint it when I do the final paint on it! I was wondering tho what rims are these? they look so good I think next summer I am going to buy a set. I also need to know the tire and rim size so I get somthin that fits.

Not sure if you saw 85seNotchie's reply in the photochop thread, but the wheels are off of the red widebody notchback choptop owned by MotorTV (Chuck? I think).

Oh, and I'm a fan of the light blue too!
I'm sure you've seen katatak's XTC's paint, but here's a real life shot, instead of the photoshop.

jetsnvettes2000 MSG #149, 07-13-2011 09:41 PM
That does look good, kinda like the blue on the 85-86 firebirds. I like the lighter pastel blue thats in the photoshop its smurfin good!

Today I got back on the choptop and decided to fix a few lingering things it had issues with one being the brakes! The back brakes sounded like loose change clanking down the road and apon taking them apart I discoverd a jacked up mess. First whoever had the car before me put brake lines off somthin big like a truck and had hte hose corled up to make up the diffrence in size then the retaining clips that hold the bak pads on was missing ugh... well is fixed now and what a diffrence the car stops!

I have had a bit of a problem with the door skins, right at the back of the dor were the panel curls over on the top both door skins are splitting a bit, I guess I will be looking for a new set of skins next summer before I do the final paint job.

After gettin the brake mess delt with I started to change the motor mounts but only managed to get the big one done, it looked like rain so I gave up for the day.

After pulling my hair out all week on a blend on a mercedes I decided to take alittle break and get back on the chop today and finish up the temporary brake conversion w the grand am calipers, I had alot of rubbing of the pad metal back against the rotor so I took a grinder and narrowed up the pad back a bit till it had a nice gap. I took it for a nice long ride tonite chasing my buddy in his lotus elise and I do got to admit the grand am brakes do stop the car alot better than the stock ones byt still I think ill go back to stock or some kind of upgrade later on.

Cut down the bump stop a bit and re welded it for more room. I will then be making bigger bumpers to fine tune it.

I have the hood cut and the bumper bonded to the headlight buckets but now I need to bond in the headlight holes to fill in the area that is missing. I have posted a bunch of pics of the progress in the nose build thread. I think tonight if it cools down I may head out and try and do a little more but we just finally after 4 weeks of no rain just got a nice 4 hour storm so who knows I may just hide out in the house yet!

I will have it done by mid summer I think I just need to pencil in some me time and hammer it out.       Steve got a little farther with making engine goodies :

Next thing to make is the lower engine dog bone, I mae custom poly bushings for it now we just need to figure out how long it is and weld in the rod.

Breaks my heart but I am selling my choptop, $11,000 comes with tons of extra parts and the Fiero Fiberglass nose project listed here in the build thread on one of the pages with its own thread. Engine is in and done drives perfectly and sounds great. just did not get around to taking pics that would fit on here yet.

I believe he mentioned on facebook that he is building another Choptop and a plane and also wants to keep his chopping skills up to par.
