Swapping in a newer Getrag transmission (Page 1/2)
fierosound APR 15, 01:05 PM
Information pulled together from several threads (thanks guys).
Wiki on transmission: https://en.wikipedia.org/wi...rag_282_transmission

These are circa 1989-1994 Berreta/Cavalier Getrag trannys - note location of arm on clutch fork - INSIDE the bellhousing.
Some may have HTOB (Hydraulic Throw Out Bearing - also useable)
If they come from a V6 car, the transmission will bolt directly to the V6 2.8L V6.

Sometimes you may find a Quad-4 Getrag that's too good to pass up (new or low miles)
You can have a transmission shop change the bellhousing half of the Quad-4 Getrag transmisson to a V6 bellhousing.
Tips: http://www.fiero.nl/forum/A...100421-2-095259.html

With a Quad-4 trans you'll need the bellhousing from a V6 Getrag (you probably have a worn out V6 tranny anyway)
When you swap an original Fiero bellhousing, you'll only need the Cable Linkage Conversion Kit below.

Here's the scoop on parts needed for newer FWD V6 Getrag transmission as pictured above in our Fiero application.

In some cases you may have to split the case to change the gear for the VSS. (speedometer)
Dickman has the gear $25: http://rodneydickman.com/pr....php?products_id=330

You use this transmission with stock Fiero Getrag 5-speed shift cables and stock clutch slave cylinder.

Use the stock Fiero select cable bracket - or new one from Rodney if you don't have one. $24

- shift cable bracket $67 (if you don't have factory one)

The bracket for the Select Cable will need to be bolted on.
The transmission already has pilot holes that need to be drilled and tapped for the bolts.

Here are close up pics of what has to be drilled, and one with the select bracket installed.

Original switch GM part number is 10075403 (from P22 parts book - but GM likes to recycle numbers)

The later Getrags have a magnetic VSS that produces ~24,000 PPM. This will match up to a lot of the later PCMs. (Matched the 4.9, perfectly.)
It may also work with a 7730, depending upon the application.
You will still need the buffer circuit to connect with the speedo output of the PCM, and the speedometer.

We're looking for a back-up transmission to use in our Fiero-truck Lemons vehicle. Is there any information on the specific vehicles the Quad-4 Getrag were found in? We have the spare bellhousing already available from a blown 282.

Thanks!
