'84 - '87 Manual Transmission Axle Replacement - Step by Step Photo Log (Page 4/4)

Good job, but I personally don't like prying on aluminum. Suggest a slide hammer. Also upon removing the axle I always try to use a support of some sort for the DROP of the heavy axle out of the diff I believe this can ruin the seal and require replacement. My experience on my 85 GT: The gyrations to just clear the bearing seal with the threaded axle tip is disconcerting, but I have never torn the rubber lip removing or installing the axle. Again, great pics and obvious TLC!

Next, weave a funnel down into the hole in the transmission like so:

Then from up top, pour your favorite transmission oil into the funnel. Even if you have cruise control hardware cluttering the view, you can still pour it in from the top as I did without getting any oil where it isn't supposed to go. Just tip the bottle slowly on it’s side and it’ll pour straight down without burping out and making a mess. 5W30 was the original oil recommended by GM for the manual transmissions, but they have since changed that to Syncromesh oil available at your local dealership for about $15 per liter in Canada or $6 per quart in the US. If you followed my advice earlier, you’ll only need to add one liter (quart), otherwise if you drained the transmission entirely, then here’s what you need to add for the various models: 4 speed Muncie – 2.8L (5.9 pints); 5 speed Isuzu – 2.5L (5.3 pints); 5 speed Getrag – 1.9L (4 pints).

Reinstall the VSS and you’re good to go!

This by itself was GREAT information. I couldn't find legit photo's of this any where. Thanks for this mate

Another great write-up Dave, kudos to you for assisting the community again and again. I like the idea of putting grease in behind the bearing, I guess that's to keep contaminant's out? Since you have time on your side, I think you should start a Pennock's TV series for Fiero enthusiasts! Full Fiero tear down and reassembly.

This kind of information with pic's thru out the whole process is another good reason I joined the Pennock's forum. I have received a lot of help from many members and thank Glen Pennock for starting and maintaining this site . I also thank all the other members that have helped me out with information and great deals on parts . I would like to ask everyone to remember to buy Glen a beer to help keep this site going and keeps Fiero enthusiast informed and together , allowing us to keep these cars from being forgotten and just scraped when broken .
